PCP and Vita D and tiredness.

Post by SleepyRose » Mon Mar 23, 2009 9:36 am

Not THAT PCP!

I went for a followup to my PCP, I LOVE her. Anyways I was going on about the tiredness, the yawning, the fact that I have to drag myself out of bed. I had a Thyroid done last visit so thats out but she said she had just been to a seminar about pain and one of the things they've found is that Vita D helps pain control in ppl with MS and Fibromyalgia. A side effect was that the D makes people less tired!

Many ppl have a low D level. I think she said that it should be over 50 and many come back around 14.
If its tests low, they give you a loading dose once a week for 2 weeks, then 1000IU a day for the rest of your life. The test takes 3 weeks to get results. She also did a Vita B12 level so maybe one or the other are responsible for my sloth-ly-ness.

I just figured that a D tab a day might be a good idea for any of us.
BTW, I did ask her about D being a fat soluble vitamin and the danger of build up. She said its not a problem with these doses.

LOL! How did you know that title would raise a few eyebrows? Thanks for the info on Vit D. I doubt mine is ok since I don't leave the house very often to get sunshine. Think I'll ask my PCP about it next time.

SleepyRose, I could be your twin! I'm sitting here right now barely able to keep my eyes open! I yawn a lot, and have to drag myself out of bed each day. Had blood work done, including Vit D, two weeks ago, and it came back at 13. I just started my prescription mega doses of D last week. (I'll be taking a large dose once a week for three months, and then get rechecked to see where I am.) I was very excited to see what your PCP told you. Mine said that although fatigue isn't normally associated with Vit D deficiency, he has had patients tell him that once their Vit D deficiency was taken care of, they were much less fatigued. So....

I have thyroid problems from Graves' Disease (take Synthroid), but they keep telling me my numbers are fine. Vit D deficiency is many times a problem for people with thyroid issues.

Also, "There is increasing evidence that vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk of some cancers, immune diseases, and cardiovascular disease." http://www.labtestsonline.org/understan ... /test.html

Thanks so much for sharing!

Pam

I had Vitamin D levels tested about 6 months ago and they came back very low.
We did the megadose intervention, which boosted levels into the normal range.
I was then given a specific dose to continue with daily.
I've noticed a huge difference in energy levels and mental state.

I insisted that my husband be tested, and his levels came back normal.
The boys haven't done it yet, but I wish they would.

My wife and her sister were tested, the Doctor put them on 2,000 units daily, I also use it at that level, Can't hurt. I live in a "Cave", just me and the other Ding-Bats. Jim

This is really encouraging, Shari, thanks for sharing! I hope I get the same response!! Although some might say there's no hope for my mental state.

Is there an OTC way to take mega doses of Vitamin D? I just can't go to the doctor one more time this month. But I'm intrigued by this.

What dosage?

I've been taking the B-12 sublingual tablets, after our discussion on that, but I haven't noticed any boost in energy.

Thanks much!!!!
B.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

I personally wouldn't take mega doses unless I knew I was low. (Maybe your doc would just let you get a blood test for it without an office visit?) My prescription dosage is 50,000 units once a week for three months before rechecking. As a comparison, the Calcium and D OTC I was taking right before I found out I was low is 400 IU. (So, looks like the 400 IU wasn't helping much!) There are different types of D, and I don't know if the OTC and the prescription ones are the same or not.

You can order the Vit D test online (w/o going through a doc) and get the actual blood test at a place like LabCorp, if you really want it and doc won't order it (or you don't have insurance), but it's over a hundred bucks. http://www.healthcheckusa.com/lab_tests ... 25_Hydroxy

I dont know what the loading dose is but she said the daily dose is 1000IU. You can just get that at the store I think.

Then we must be triplets! And I'm already taking D3 and B12 supplemements.

Let me know how that goes, Pam.

I certainly hope so, for both of us!! Wouldn't it be something if it all ended up being a vitamin deficiency?

I just called the pharmacy, and the actual script is for ergocalciferol, which is Vit D2. I know when you take mega doses you need to be checked at regular intervals because it can mess with your calcium, and some other stuff I can't remember right now. (That brain function problem again!!).
