Setting machine via Smartcard

In playing around with Encore Pro, it appears one can change the machine settings via the smartcard. If the doc sees a need for change, EPro will write the new specs to the card and (I assume) when you insert the card the machine gets reprogrammed. Anyone have experience with that?

Sounds much easier than waiting for the DME or holding down buttons and scrolling thru menus--if you know what I mean...

I'm also thinking that with two cards, one could easily switch between Dr-prescribed and self-prescribed settings if compliance is an insurance issue. (It isn't for me--I'm just saying...)

I've never actually tried to do it, but I know it can and is done. Considering that it has to be done through Encore Pro, and the time it would take to do that, it's always seemed to me to be faster to do it by going through the setup buttons. But then, I don't (or haven't had to) make many changes in my machine settings over the years. To me, going through the Setup (buttons) also verifies that ALL the settings are as they should be.

I've made changes pressure changes both ways.

If I happen to have Encore Pro already up and running (like having just finished doing a download) at a time that I want to change the pressure, the "create prescription" feature in Encore Pro is handy. Yes, it puts the change on the Smart Card so that when you insert the card back into the machine, the new setting will go into effect the next time the machine is started. Mode of operation and pressure change are all that can be done via Encore Pro's "create prescription" thingy, as best I remember.

If I don't already have Encore Pro open, I'd rather make my pressure setting change via the buttons on the machine. As Den mentioned, using the menu on the machine lets you go through all of the it, to be sure All of them are the way you want.

The ability to change pressure through Encore Pro was the biggest reason (as far as I know) that Respironics eventually stopped allowing online stores to sell it. That resulted in Johnny Goodman (owner of cpap.com and cpaptalk.com) going to bat for "CPAP users" and convincing Respironics to create a software FOR the users... Encore Viewer, which does not let you change pressure on the Smart Card itself. Of course, we can all still change the pressure through the machine buttons, but Encore Viewer was a very nice thing for Respironics to develop, imho. Showed a desire on the part of the company to listen to, and cooperate with, some of the things proactive "users" want a company to provide... i.e. software to see what's happening.

Yes, it does do that fine, but if you use the buttons you sometimes get more options like setting the pressure different in range, the card only does .5 CM steps. Which is all that's necessary any finer is just nit-picking, it makes no difference, we are not sending a rocket to mars here. Jim

I make my own changes right on the machine and don't see much benefit ( in my case ) to add a layer.

I don't have a sleep Doc and the DME is nothing more than a sales agent... so I'm on my own with the help of the good folks here of course.

Nobody but your DME or doctor should alter your settings. It's illegal to do it yourself.

I don't think it is illegal to change your own settings but should be done with care. Obviously the above post was made by a DME. It would be illegal for a DME to change your settings without a Dr's script.

Please cite the FEDERAL LAW that pertains to that.
I know you can't because there isn't one!
It's OUR therapy.....not the doctors' or the DMEs'.
Any "law" in existence would also have to apply to people with Diabetes who also adjust their own treatment.

My Doctor wouldn't know which buttons to push. I'd have to show her!
