Blue Lights...

Post by LinkC » Wed Mar 04, 2009 1:20 pm

Anyone seen this?

Could a common component used in consumer electronics lead to eyestrain, headaches, disturbed sleep, and even increase the risk of cancer? It sounds alarmist, but in fact the first three of these claims are accepted as fact by experts in relevant fields – the last, the risk of cancer, is unproven.

So what's the deadly component? The blue LED. Yes, those bright blue sparks of light on mobile phones, PCs, toasters, TVs, monitors, air purifiers, medical equipment, electric toothbrushes, and thousands of other products.

Now, don't throw away your electric toothbrush just yet – blue LEDs won't definitely make you ill. But used in the wrong way in poorly-designed products, or used at the wrong time, they can. It may sound unbelievable, but read on.

Very interesting article, LinkC! Thanks for the post.

I've always placed a dark sock over the annoying three blue LEDs on my M series machine. I detest those blue lights glowing in a dark bedroom.

I doubt there is a cancer risk. Blue LEDs hit the market in the mid 1990s and they are expensive and very new. I think people have gone overboard on them because the price has dropped and they give a product a unique look. Personally I think red would be good because it does not wash the rods in your eyes. You can be exposed to red light without loosing your night vision. All other light sources cause you to loose the ability to see well in the dark right after exposure.

I hate the lights on my M series CPAP! I am tempted to take apart the machine to clip the LEDs. They are useless. I never use the light to push the right button. I just know that the middle one is the right one. My DME gave me a magnetic card with their support numbers on it. I have used it since day 1 to cover those stupid lights.

ps. if anyone has taken the cover off of their cpap let me know. I am interested in knowing if there were any problems with a slight disassembly.

Had I read that report before this board I would have thought, "Meh, whatever". But the rage that has resulted from these little blue lights in SO MANY of the folks on this board has me wondering if there is some veracity to that report. I just close my eyes and fall asleep. I feel so... so inadequate somehow... I've resolved to stare at them tonight and see if I can't get pissed off too!!!

That blue light thing that Phillips is marketing for $279 might be a nice little torture device...

WHAT SHARKBAIT SAID!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it's genetic. Some of us are genetically "meh" about the blue lights, some of us have serious Blue Light Rage. I sure hope the BLR's don't shop at Kmart....

Linus - DON'T DO IT. You risk voiding your warranty, and if you want that machine worked on and someone else to pay for it, you'll regret doing it.

Try the sock trick.

Cheers,
Babs

I hate the lights on my machine and always keep them covered. The lights on hubby's machine, (blue lights) don't bother him so even though I gave him a towel to cover them he doesn't use it... I just try not to look in his direction at night

I won't open my machine until it is two years old.
