Turbinate Coblation

Post by kteague » Mon Feb 23, 2009 10:38 am

For those who are interested, The Doctors on TV this morning had a segment about Turbinate Coblation for relief of nasal congestion caused by allergies. Might be a route worth considering for those wanting to do everything possible before resorting to surgical removal or reduction of turbinates. One thing I think I'd ask first is if having had coblation would make any difference in the ability to have or the success of surgery if it became necessary. fI'd be interested in knowing how much difference it actually makes. My adult daughter had her turbinates cauterized as a child at the time of her T&A, but she as an adult still suffers with severe allergy symptoms.

I have been recommended this surgery but it comes in conjunction with a septoplasty to realign my deviated septum. I have always suffered nosebleeds. When I was 19 I went to a doctor to see about cauterization. He said not to do it. My nose needs a major overhaul but I'm doing OK with CPAP, so I'm going to wait. In decade they may have a less invasive procedure for septoplasty. Right now recovery is relatively long and painful, I have heard.

I had a septoplasty and resection and reduction. It doesn't hurt that bad. And now I can breath without afrin.

FWIW, the University of Washington is doing a clinical trial investigating the use of Turbinate Reduction in PAP treatment. [Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT) of Nasal Turbinate Reduction to Improve Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Outcomes for Sleep Apnea (TURBO)]

Thanks for the link. I noticed that people with deviated septums (me) are excluded from this type of radiofrequency surgery, so for me, I'd have the old fashioned drill tearing up my septum and turbinates as it makes headway ever-so-close to my cerebral cortex. Then pack my nose for 10 days while I watch Dr. Phil on oxycodone. All this so I can breathe better through my nose and improve the efficacy of CPAP, that is assuming nature takes over and I switch back from a mouth breather to a nose breather. Think I'll pass for now.
