UPDATE: 109, 47%, and 19

That husband of mine that I've been trying to get a sleep study for years had one last night (split study). Doc called with his results: AHI of 109 and O2 sat down to 47% !!! I was in such shock that it was that bad, I didn't think to ask for a copy of the report when it's done. He has an appointment in six weeks with the doc, though, so I'll get it then.

He signed a paper last night saying it was okay to get the cpap stuff through them (thought sleep facilities couldn't sell cpap stuff?). So, they're going to be calling in the next day or two to set up a time to come in. They have the same type of machine I do, so that's what I want for him since I already know how to use it and have the software. You know, I didn't think to ask what pressure he needed, but they did say he did well on cpap.

Think I scared him when I called to tell him, but that's good, I think. Maybe that will make him more diligent in using it.

I bet you are in shock! Thank goodness you got to him in time. If he doesn't take it seriously, make sure he has great life insurance!

It seems a frightfully good reason to NOT wait six weeks for anything....

No, it's six weeks until the next doc appointment. They should be calling in the next day or two to set up a time to come in to get the machine and try masks. The doc wanted him to be on the machine for six weeks, then come in to see him and assess how things are going.

If he ends up being as stubborn about this as he can be about other things, yes, I'll make sure the life insurance is really high!! LOL

holy crap 47%??????????????? He's lucky to be alive. Really, really lucky.

I can only echo the collective consternation at those results!

As far as him doing fine on cpap in a few hours of a split night study - that doesn't always translate to the same setup being ok all night every night. My first machine had no exhalation relief and no humidifier because they said I did ok without them in the 2 hours sleep of my split night study. Turns out I did need them both. Good that he has your experience to help him get off to a good start. With those numbers, my guess is he'll embrace this treatment and count his blessings.

Wow, they ought to be getting him that CPAP like tonight. That's scary.

Babs, thanks so much for the offer. Right now, I think he's preferring a FF (and he definitely mouth-breathes), but I will let you know!! All he could tell me about the mask from the sleep study was it covered his mouth and nose, so I at least know it's some type of FF.

I tried to get him to call to see if they could loan him one until this other gets set up, but he won't do it. Doesn't sound like it'll be long, though. The thing that amazes me is he never gets sleepy driving, doesn't ever nod off in conversation. He plays hours and hours of bridge, and he's never said anything about nodding off doing that. (He's some kind of life master category and plays all the time---even teaches it.) He does nod off at the drop of a hat, though, if he's just sitting and watching TV or movie. And he does have a horrible memory. We thought it was just age and from a car accident he had years ago where he was knocked unconscious (not his fault), but a lot of it could be OSA-related, I'm sure.

Yeah, he thinks because it was "no problem" at the sleep study that he won't have a problem with at home. And I truly hope that's right, but I doubt it.
