I guess I failed last night.

Post by TheDreamer » Fri Feb 13, 2009 11:04 am

I did wake up last night to go to the bathroom, and while I was up I got a drink. But I had been very thirsty just before going to bed...and drank more (water) than usual before going to bed.

I hadn't looked at my CPAP data in several days...so I took a look this morning. It logged large leak last night....lasting 25 minutes. about half an hour before I woke up to go the bathroom.

I've been having issues with this particular mask (Opus), in that it would leak whenever I tried to sleep in a position other than laying on my back facing straight up. The plastic side bracing contacting my pillow would cause it to push the nasal pillows off my nose. Last night my neck was sore from sleeping always stuck in this one position...so I guess my body took over and rolled me on to my side somewhere during the night....and then later rolled me back so the mask would stop leaking. But, without waking me up....

The night before I got the Opus mask, I had been chatting online...and the idea of giving nasal pillow masks was brought up....and browsing masks on cpap.com, it seemed to me that if I was going to do this.... that I would like to try the ComfortLite2 from Respironics. I was told to give the Opus mask a try for 2 weeks, but soon after starting it I threw a bid for a ComfortLite2 on cpapauction (new, never used)...and ended up winning it. It arrived on Monday. I've been debating as to when I would open up the package and try it out.

Looks like tonight I'm going to try it. Wonder how I'm going to explain this to the DME....

The Dreamer.

Explain - there is no need to explain. The mask they gave you isn't working and you are trying a new mask at your own expense. THey should be glad that you are putting money out of your own pocket.

people on this forum are unemployed hypocandiracs who sit on their @ss all day googling information and giving dangerous and unqualified advice to unsuspecting people looking for "honest" information. These people are not experts they are hypocrites they have no life. This is how they contribute to society and how they feel justified taking a government check. Be careful their adive is NOT professional and is only opinion based.

I like the ComfortLite 2. I use my Headrest mask all the time, but if I were going to use any of the different nasal pillows masks I have stashed away, it would be the CL2 or the Swift LT.

Here's a link to tuck away in case you need it for tweaks to your CL2:

Good thing you check your data from time to time. I've always thought "leak" data was the most important (and most overlooked by DMEs) info we can get from a machine that shows more than just hours of use.

I've seen downloads from the Smart Card for several people who had been using their machines for months. Saw night after night of Large Leak compromising their therapy all along, with no checking on it by the DME. After all, the mask fit fine when the DME had them sit in a chair for the mask fitting, didn't it?

You don't need to explain anything to them.

BOTH masks I got from DME are in the closet (along with one I bought online). I'm using a ComfortGel FF I also got @ cpapauction.

My DME called to tell me I would be eligible soon for my replacement mask and did I want them to order it now. She wanted to verify the type/size and was very confused that her records didn't include the CG-FF! I didn't let on the actual source...just re-iterated that I wanted the CG-FF Medium.

That's the mask which has worked for me for three months. Will you be using it with the nasal mask, the nasal pillows, or the direct seals?

I tried a whole bunch of pillow positions. What works best for me is a standard side-sleeper pillow on top of a king-size side-sleeper pillow. This gives me a "shelf" like a cpap pillow, and lets me kind of roll my cheek into the pillows without blocking the vents on the mask.

I call it my "Klingon forehead" mask.

It came with simple and pillow cushions....and I'm planning to try the pillows tonight. Though direct seals sound interesting, and wonder if I would pursue trying those.

That's the way mine came. I found the simple cushion (which was just fine in the ice-cold sleep lab) to be too warm for me in the more moderate temperatured house -- my nose tended to sweat.

I used the pillow cushions for several weeks, going back and forth between the small and the medium -- but the small was too small for me to get enough air, and the medium I could not get adjusted quite right.

Rested Gal had commented that the Direct Seals weren't something most people liked. I figured that since most people didn't care for Bipap, and I liked it just fine, that I'd probably like the Direct Seals just fine. I ended up with the #4 Direct Seal, and it's proved to be my best fit. My leak rate went down to what was correct for the CL2 at my pressures, and I've even had a few perfectly flat leak lines! They're mostly flat most of the time -- no big spikes, and rarely do I have large leaks.

Of course, masks being individual the way they are, YMMV.

Hope the CL2 works for you!

Failing is what I did Thursday night.

Fell asleep in the easy chair watching TV, Woke up at 1:30 am went upstairs to bed, got my mask ready. I then got into bed with the mask in my hand and fell asleep without putting it on.

Now that is a fail!!

Dreamer,

Failing is boxing up the cpap and putting it away in the closet. What you had was a bad night or two. Sounds like you're getting back on the horse which is exactly what you should do, my friend. Keep at it!
