CPAP and airport security

Post by DBV » Fri Feb 13, 2009 3:54 am

I am a CPAP newbie and am about to take my first airplane trip with the CPAP equipment. What should I expect going through airport security? What does "swabbing" the machine mean? Is there anything that can be done that would make it easier or faster to get through security? I don't have any issues with being searched or security being very diligent in doing their job. I appreciate their efforts to protect my safety and try to do everything possible to make their job less difficult for them as well as myself.

Welcome to the forum!
I've never had any problems with TSA (other than them being crabby on occasion). I prepack just the flow generator in a large ziploc bag or produce bag and when it comes time, just pull that out of the travel bag and put it in a separate bin. Before I turn loose of it, though, I ask one of the guards to please change their gloves before they handle the machine. 99% of them are very pleasant and will agree with you that they wouldn't want someone else's germs on their breathing machine, either. Send it through the scanner and follow their direction getting through the gate. You'll want to stay with your machine as much as possible but don't scare them! 'Swabbing' just means they take that wand and wipe the surface of your generator to check for powders or residue that they are trained to look for. Smile, thank them for the good work they do and wish them a good day, then off you go to get some Starbuck's and look for your gate!
Enjoy your vacation and good for you that you're taking your machine with you.
All the best,
LKTNKY
