Yawning all day long
Seems like since Ive been on CPAP (Dec 18 I started) Ive been really tired, maybe even more than before CPAP. I yawn constantly and have no energy. Ive noticed that my mood is better and I seem to laugh and enjoy things more and Im not so quick to snap but I am SO tired!
I sleep straight through 6, 8 sometimes even 10 hours but I have to drag myself out of bed. My stats are ok I think. Last night was
AHI1.2
Leak 39
OA .7
H.4
VS 2
The stats the night before were a little different.
AHI3.6
Leak 49
H3
VS12.5
The night before that was about the same with a 38 leak rate.
The accepted leak rate (I think thats how you say it)for my mask is 38.
Its really discouraging. I asked my sleep doc about it and he really didnt have an answer except to put me on a waiting list for a loaner APAP to see what he can see I guess. He was so excited about my compliance rate that I dont think he really beleived I could be so tired after getting so much sleep.
I hate to complain because so many people CANT sleep or are having major mask problems but this is really getting to me.
Any ideas?

Sleepyrose,
Have you had your thyroid and blood sugar checked? Tireness is one of the hardest symptoms to get rid of, but you've been on CPAP long enough you should be getting some relief. It would be prudent to make sure that there isn't something else hinding behind your apnea symptoms.

Hi, yawning is definitely a sign that you don't have enough 02, but whether it's OSA or Cpap related is a question. See your family MD to find out what's happening if possible.
Re: Yawning all day long
Rose, I would say to give it more time... you are about at the 7 week mark on the hose at this point. It takes time to reverse the effects of apnea and all that sleep deprivation... for however long it has been going on it your case.

Re: Yawning all day long
Thanks everyone, I did have a thorough exam and bloodwork just before CPAP, thyroid included. I have an appt with my PCP in March so Ill check in with her then. I just thought maybe other people might be having the same problem and the magic solution!
Re: Yawning all day long
After one year of CPAP therapy, I slept 6-9 hours a night still had daytime sleepiness. My oxygen, thyroid and sugar levels are in the normal range. I started the prescription Provigil, and it seems to work well. I usually don't take it on weekends, and I can tell.
Re: Yawning all day long
I found that I yawned constantly when I was taking lexapro. Since I stopped taking it, my yawning has stopped and my AHI is way lower. Just a thought.

Im on Prozac and Wellbutrin and have been for years. Ive never been as tired as I have been this last month or so.
Provigil sounds good, maybe I'll approach my Dr about it but he seems to be against pretty much any drug. He tried to get me to quit the Prozac, told me no more Benadryl or Nyquil, no more coffee or Vivarin, no Melatonin, on and on.

I can remember having episodes and TRYING to explain what the heart stopping things were to quite a few drs even back in my 20s. Im 60 now.
I'll have to live to 100 to pay back my sleep debt.
Re: Yawning all day long
Ditto the Lexapro - yawning is a side effect of a lot of anti-depressants as well as fatigue.
I have read here about CO2 retention and strange things like that. Maybe DSM or someone else will chime in on that.
Also - That AHI is great but means nothing if you still wake up a lot through the night due to pressure or noise or other issues from the CPAP.
Thre is a great thread on that other forum about blue led's and sleep. Do a google search on blue led's and sleep. We got a new clock with blue led's and I have never liked it. I swear since reading that information and getting rid of that and the M-series led's, I sleep better...

I have blue LED clock and CPAP machine. I'll block em out tonight and see what happens. Ive wondered about the CO2 thing myself.
Re: Yawning all day long
Rose,
My pulmonologist gave me an oximeter to take home one night so he could see how my oxygen levels were while I was wearing my mask. It is important to be able your oxygen levels are good while you are on the hose.
When my oxygen levels came back OK, my pulmonologist suggested I have another sleep study. I asked why. He said to rule out narcolepsy. I asked him what he would do if I ended up narcoleptic, he said he would prescribe Provigil. I asked him what he would do if I didn't end up with narcolepsy, he said he would prescribe Provigil.
I said, then just give me Provigil. I'm not going through the hassle and money of another sleep study.

Re: Yawning all day long
I tried Provigil and began having PVCs all the time. I had to fight from having a panic attack when they would get bad. It made me wired and I talked more than I already do and I am a motor mouth. I will not use the stuff again. Also it is so expensive most insurance companies will fight paying for it. It was $800 a month. I felt guilty taking it because this is the kind of thing that is killing our insurance rates and coverage.
Do the search on blue led's because it is so interesting to read. It can effect melatonin levels according to some studies. I would have never imagined this from a blue led.
