Problem with Swift LT pillows (collapsing)

Post by Debjax » Sun Feb 01, 2009 10:03 pm

Hubby is asking for help. He really wants to try the Swift LT (coulda knocked me over with a feather), but when he puts the set on, he says it's like the pillows collapse and he can't get any air through them....he's wondering what he's doing wrong?

AND, I am so proud of him, he kept his FFM on all night for his first "real" night on CPAP...well, until he got an unexpected "shower" at 6am today.. (got to remember to check the temp on the thermostat before going to bed tonight)

The LT pillows are very soft so really the harness needs to be adjusted so that they are just touching the nose.
Once the machine turns on they will inflate and become tighter.

I love my LT and I'm sure your hubby will as soon as he gets the hang of adjustments to it.
The whole rigs slips on and off just like a hat once it's adjusted so ther is no need to keep re-adjusting after he finds the sweet spot.

Good luck,
TerryB

Funny you should mention this just now. In addition to TerryB's note above, I just recently noticed that a couple of new LT pillows I acquired, are of a clearer and definitely thinner quality silicone than the first two I had. They are so flimsy that I have not found a way to successfully use them, and I have never previously had any problem whatever with my trusty Swift LT. My recently posted difficulty in getting to the ResMed website, related to my plan to conatact ResMed this morning to inquire about this. Will let you all know what they have to say.

I use the Swift LT and have not had them collapse; however, if they are not positioned just right the airflow feels much less and you need to wiggle them til the airflow is full again. It can feel like you are not getting enough air.

Georgio gave me a tip. Use Ayr Gel around your nostrils to help get a better seal. It does seem to help!

When I first tried to us the LT, I had to turn the pressure up on my machine. It was set at 5 and that wasn't enough to stop me from feeling like I was suffocating, 6 felt like it was trying to blow me away (this was my first night on CPAP), 5.5 was just right. I also didn't get enough air when I put in the small pillows. I needed medium. Also, these pillows are not designed to be smooshed against your nose and work best when they aren't. I spend some time when I first put the headgear on pulling the pillows AWAY from my nose.

Definately have him make sure that the pillows are not too tight on the face. I have never had them collapse but have occasionally felt like I wasn't getting any air. Usually I loosen the mask straps on top a bit and things are fine after that.

All of the above points are true for a happy partnership with the Swift LT. And that is why the new pillows I got, were so clearly substandard. The silicone is so thin and flimsy that the necks of the nasal pillows simply collapse upon touching the nose. Nothing like what I have been using from the start.

I did call ResMed this morning and they are registering the complaint for followup--will be sending out new replacements to me, but they are shipped from another location,so cannot be examined first. Hopefully they will correct the problem.......And this may have nothing to do with the issue raised by the original poster, so carry on with the usual helps with this great mask! Other users of the LT might want to examine the new pillows you get to see if they feel & look different, so you can pick better ones if available to you.
