Switching from Ultra to Quattro

Post by Beck » Thu Jan 22, 2009 5:35 pm

Hi,

Has anyone switched from Resmed's Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask to the Quattro? If so, how did the sizes compare?

I've been using a Small Shallow Ultra Mirage mask, based on measurements taken at my doctor's office a few years ago. However, when I do the sizing guide on this site, the recommended size for the Ultra Mirage is Medium Standard.

Aside from that discrepancy, the Quattro doesn't even show up on my list of recommended masks. But based on the description and the reviews, the Quattro seems like a mask I should try.

So, if I want to try the Quattro, what size should I try? I notice there is no distinction between "shallow" and "standard," so at least that part is a non-issue.

Thanks for any advice or input!

I tried that switch, and my RT said the sizes are comparable (I use a medium standard UMFF, same for the Quattro). I liked the Quattro, but it seems to put too much pressure on the bridge of my nose, no matter how I tried to adjust it, so I still use my UMFF most of the time.

Beck I was planning on making the opposite switch because the quattro is not good for me....LOL

Interested in seeing if anyone who logs on today has had any experience with Ultra vs Quattro.

When I had my sleep study the first mask they tried on me was a Med. Quattro. At one time I complained that it seems too confining to my nose, so they swapped me to a large UMFF. It seemed to be a better mask then, so that is what my RX called for. After reading on the forum for a while I bought a large Quattro at the auction to try. 1st night it seemed better but it also seemed a trifle large, so within a few nights I was back to the UMFF. I felt that I needed the straps too tight with the UMFF, so when I went back to my sleep center they let me try a Med. Quattro. At first I really liked it. It seemed to seal better and it was just a tiny bit smaller than the large UMFF. I ordered a med, Quattro from an auction and it became my main mask. I was happy for about 1 1/2 months. All of a sudden I could not keep a seal no matter what I tried. I tried the UMFF and then I tried the large Quattro again. I have been using the large Quattro for about 3 weeks so far with good results. At times it sort of hurts my nose but I have been able to avoid any actual scraped skin and sore spots. If I don't shave and wash my face just prior to going to bed I lose my seal for the night at about 2:00AM and I am unable to reacquire it without washing the bellows and my face. I would love a Quattro that is exactly the same size as my large UMFF with just a little more nose relief in the frame. I am thinking of trying a Hybrid in the future t see if it works. I tried a Liberty but when I rolled to my side I always lost my seal. Among the 3 FF masks I have I do seem to make out OK but I want to find the perfect mask for me, I hope it is not a never ending quest.

Thanks for sharing, Dale. I think I'd go nuts having to switch back and forth so much to try to determine which was better.

It seems my experiences haven't been that bad compared to some others'. I've become accustomed to readjusting my mask during the night, but of course I'd rather not have to.

Beck, here is my tale.
I am now using the UM med, full time. It works very well.
There are very small differences in the sizing and curvatures of
each of these masks. Look at the pics carefully.
Hope this helps.

I have both and prefer the quattro over the ultra, yet I alternate them. Be sure to give them each a 30 day break-in try before your comparison. I just find the quattro very comfortable to the point that it feels like it floats on my face with no leakage even when I move and turn. No more waking up and struggling with the mask like I did with the Comfort2 (which is now relegated to my travel mask only)

I used to also use a small shallow UMFF then switched to an x-small Quattro last summer. I love my Quattro! It's not that I dislike the UMFF but I prefer the Quattro. My pressure used to be 15 and occasionally I'd go through a night where I just couldn't get a decent seal and the mask kept farting (had those kinds of nights with both the UMFF and the Quattro). I've now lost 60 lbs and with my pressure down to 10, it doesn't seem to happen anymore (touch wood!!!).

I did find that the Quattro hurt the bridge of my nose but I got one of Karen's wonderful padacheeks nosebridge covers and that resolved it.

Hope this helps.

I started out with the UMFF (Large Standard). Had a chance to pick up a Quattro (Large) at a decent price in 2007. Have used it off and on but the UMFF is my favorite, mainly because it feels like I get more air flow with it. The Quattro seems to be just a teeny bit larger, but it still fits fine. In my opinion, the Quattro was a "cost-cutting" design and was a poor attempt at quality. I do like the seal design in the Quattro, though. They just skimped on the rest of it.

I have both and switch between the two, but my experience is that the quattro seems a bit more comfortable and I sleep better with it. No matter how much I move around the quattro never seems to leak

I thought the sizing gage from ResMed's website was accurate. My size was just between XS and S. I also use a UMFF in a S, so I chose the Quattro in XS. Good thing! The verticle height is almost identical. To me, the Quattro sits very wide on my face, which is O.K. The mask's adjustment dial is of no consequence to me as it has to be 'all-in' for a leak-free fit.
Both have the dual-wall Mirage cushion, but very different shape/contours. I'd kind of give the nod to UMFF as being a more natural fit.
