OT: Obama's Presidential Inaugural Address

Post by roster » Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:12 pm

Thanks to Obama for keeping it simple. Below I will paste in some of the words I liked to hear. The things I did not like can wait for another day.

What I liked

*because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

*On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

*all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

*it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

*what free men and women can achieve

*Where the answer is no, (government) programs will end.

*those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day

*Its (the free market’s) power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched

*Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake.

*And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity,

*We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

*as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself

*We honor them (military currently overseas) not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves.

*For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies.

*those values upon which our success depends - hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism
*This is the source of our confidence - the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

*why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.

*We will encourage and protect the rights of individuals and companies to develop, produce and distribute novel methods of diagnosing and treating sleep apnea.

Oops, that last one was pasted incorrectly. How do you edit these things?

I don't really believe most of anything a politician has to say today (the speeches may or may not be what they wrote) TImes have changed and people are bought and sold like cattle. I didn't watch the ObamaPalooza from work and plan to try and miss everything tonight. I am more interested in the character of the person and what happens when the cameras are off. I haven't watch inaugerations before so this one didn't attract me either. Now that the POMP is over we will begin to see where things are heading.

I was impressed. I supported Obama all along though, so I'm biased.

But I've got to say, it really rubbed me the wrong way when the crowd chanted "na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye" to Bush. Lord knows he wasn't my favorite guy, but he was still the president and deserved some respect. He may have been a small man in big times, but he tried and he served and gave some of himself to the country. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad to be rid of him. I just don't think a nation of adults sends off a former president that way.

Lot's of good thoughts there. Thanks for posting them.

He mentioned the "cynics"too. Personally... I am tired of the complaining and bickering in government and among the people..time to unite and roll up the sleeves and get to work.

I'm so jaded by political speeches that i was guilty of noticing how classy Laura Bush looked in that stunning and stylish suit, how impressive Aretha Franklin's outfit was, but WHY can't these singers at important events sing these songs the way they were written and meant to be heard, how much Ya Ya Mo seemed to be enjoying playing at the inaugeration, and how intense Itzak Perlman was as he played, how stylish Michelle Obama isn't, how much she resembles her mother, how well-behaved the daughters were, I found the choice of the purple scarves of BushDaddy and BushMommy interesting .....

From what I've gathered, he's going to be at odds with his own party. There are too many special interest groups and political paybacks that are going to be involved (as always) with decision making in Washington, DC.

Someone mentioned the other day that after some time, George Bush may look "good". (and it wasn't necessarily a conservative commentator, either)

I'm not a cynic.....YET. But, I'm nervous.

By the way.....I'm waiting for "the change". With all these Clinton re-treads in there, it doesn't seem to be changing, to me.

I find it interesting that Bush was bashed for spending $50m on an inauguration and no one is saying anything about Obama spending 3 times that.

And they had a hissy fit about what was spent on Gov. Palin's wardrobe........ ???
Ya know, I've been saying that McCain and Palin were "lucky" NOT to get elected. Inheriting this economy and then having the previous "powers" (administration and Congress) throw money at "problems" (in part, created during the Clinton administration) before they gave any intelligent thoughts to whether it would work or not, is not an enviable position to be in.

I hope I'm not starting to sound "cynical"......

I am a Canadian but listened to his speech. I don't know who wrote it, but it was the best I have ever heard. Not everyone is going to agree with everything the President says but I think the majority of democrats and the majority of republicans would agree with most of what was said in his speech. President Obama has a lot of chrisma (sometimes that can be scary), but we will have to wait to see how he will do. In the meantime, we should all be praying for the President to make wise decisions and to remember the words of his speech. He will have an enormous amount of pressure on him because of the world situation, not to mention the situation at home.

Den, you are forgetting who controlled congress MOST of the Clinton years.....oh yea, it was the rethuglicans!

ALL spending bills come from the House. The Senate nor President can start ANY spending bill. Couldn't since day one. Never have been able to.

See, I paid attention back before I got OSA...LOL

Something that concerns me deeply, and is probably overlooked by most, is the predominance of the color RED,the flag color of the Bloods in the attire and accessories of all surrounding Obama. It has been seen throughout his campaign, but was overwhelming today at the inauguration. Just an observation......
When I woke up this morning my girlfriend asked me, 'Did you sleep good?' I said 'No, I made a few mistakes.'
