Sleep Apnea also goes undiagnosed in children who have little chance to seek help on their own. Since my primary care provider does not screen adults for apnea (he will after I discuss my case with him), I'm sure it doesn't enter his mind to evaluate children or adolescents. My conclusion is that we need to be on guard for youth than can't recogize the symptoms or seek help.

Re: Sleep Apnea in Our Children
I saw a girl about 8 years old at one of my sleep studies. I was kind of surprised.
Re: Sleep Apnea in Our Children
That's interesting Georgio. I am wondering how many children may be misdiagnosed with ADD or HADD when they may really have sleep apnea!

Re: Sleep Apnea in Our Children
Your bringing up a great issue. Folks doing research stumbled on an odd pattern. Children, diagnosed with ADHD, had their tonsils removed. ADHD disappeared! The children had been misdiagnosed with ADHD and actually had Sleep Apnea. Now, how tonsils being removed takes care of the problem, I don't know... Oh please, take mine out!!
When I was at my Son's Doctor, he's six, she told me that SA is quite obvious in children. I asked how so?
She told me the child's growth come's to a screeching halt! I would suppose she's referring to severe SA.
So let's see: Outbreak of obese children, outbreak of ADHD, use of medication for mood disorders, learning problems, etc ..etc...
Makes you wonder,

Re: Sleep Apnea in Our Children
I don't have the links now but there are two pediatricians in practice together who claim they have found that 80% of their ADD kids have sleep apnea. With successful treatment of sleep apnea the ADD goes away.Hawthorne wrote:That's interesting Georgio. I have a vision that we will figure out an easy way to ensure that children develop wide, deep, healthy and attractive jaws and then obstructive sleep apnea becomes an obscure bit of history.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ycw4uaX ... re=related

Re: Sleep Apnea in Our Children
ive wondered if SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) could be linked to sleep apnea.
Re: Sleep Apnea in Our Children
Another thing that should be added into this discussion is heredity. I agree that most doctors do not even consider OSA as a possibility in children. Those of us with SA need to be more acutely aware of the symptoms of SA in our children and more insistent with their doctor when we see it raising it's ugly head.
