Results from my first reading on my machine

Post by gapwedge » Tue Jan 20, 2009 8:11 am

I have only been a APAP user since 1/2/09. I still have a lot to learn and this forum is a great place to do that. I found out thanks to Slinky how to read the clinical menu. I did not know it had to be read before 12 noon as I was getting NO DATA in the afternoon. I have a ResMed S8 AutoSet II. The initial settings were Settling 20 min max; 10cm to 16cm range. One week into the thearpy my settings have been changed by the doctor to Settling 15 min max; 6cm to 12cm range.
Here were my readings this morning (1/22/09): AHI 1.3 HI 0.2 Leak 0.00 Pressure 11.8. I do not know what these readings really mean except I sleep very well during the night.

Hello Gapwedge,
Its good to have you on the forum.
I have that model also and its a very good machine. I've used mine since September.
I'm still learning a lot myself. Perhaps others here can be of more help than I.
I was just wondering why the doctor changed your pressure settings.
It seems to me that if your pressure is around 11.8, he wouldn't have set the minimum at 6.
Mine ranges from about 7.8 to 8. 6 usually, and I have my minimum set at 7, with EPR at 1.
However, your AHI looks very good, and so you are getting good therapy.
Good luck,
Jay

This is 1/20/09. Did you get your dates mixed up? I often get my dates wrong!

Anyway, no matter the date, these are excellent numbers. Looks like your machine is set just about right on, for your situation and you are getting very good therapy. Your AHI is great and an HI (Hypoapneas) of 0.2 on a Resmed is great since those machines tend to report more HIs. I assume your AI (apneas) was 1.1. Your leak rate couldn't be better!

With a pressure range of 6cm to 12cm, a 95% pressure of 11.8 MAY mean that you need to adjust your pressure range again. You are spending 95% and or less of your night at a pressure of 11.8. Depending on how much time you are at the 11.8, you MAY have to consider a somewhat higher range again.

SInce it is your first night's data though, I would leave it for a week before considering any adjustment. Keep track of the data and how you continue to feel and then, in a week, you MAY want to try a somewhat higher range if you find you are spending a lot of the night at 11.8 and your AI and HI are increasing. If it turns out you are at 11.8 a lot of the night, it might be better with a higher range. It takes the machine awhile to get from 6 cm to 11.8 cm which means you MAY not be getting optimal therapy for a good part of the night.

I capitalized all the "MAYS" in my post because 1 night is too soon to have enough data to go on.

Great beginning though!!

No, my first night of therapy was 1/2/09. I just learned how to read the data yesterday.

The reported pressure is the pressure AT OR BELOW which you spent 95% of the night.

Notice that both pressure ranges set, i.e. 10 cms to 16 cms and 6 cms to 12 cms, have a spread of 6 cms between them. It would be interesting to know what the Pressure Support is set at. One would assume 6 but often it is left at a Default of 4 for some reason.

The Settling was probably reduced due to your getting to sleep sooner than the original setting of 20 minutes. Your data from last night was excellent. It is unusual to find an AI higher than the HI, especially on a Resmed, so I'd guess even if your data stays this good and you continue feeling this rested every morning that some minor tweaking would leave you as rested, your data as good, but your HI somewhat higher than your AI. But I wouldn't be in too big a hurry to toy w/your therapy settings for a while yet. IF at all.
