waking with apnea

Post by ainsle14 » Mon Jan 19, 2009 7:23 pm

I am a newbie who is about to get a apap. One of the worse parts of the day for me with apnea is when i wake. I do not feel rested. When i awake i feel terrible, anxious and etc when i wake. I was wondering if other people here in the forum have experienced this with apnea when they awake?

Yes....prior to using cpap...along with feelings of choking and the heart racing. With Cpap...no such awakenings.

Yes, before C-PAP, it was all I could do to roll myself out of bed in the morning. Then it was all I could do to keep myself from collapsing back into bed. I was exhausted ALL the time. It was terribly hard to get going in the morning.

Yes that is quite common. The apap should help you a lot with this. Welcome to the forum.

Yes, to extremes.

OK now with CPAP.

Good luck,

Let me put it this way.....everyone that knows me for more than a few days understood that you did NOT call me before 9:00 am and expect me to answer the phone in a civil manner, you'd probably get some type of growl.... (I was pretty much still "out of it")....I was NOT a morning person, would wake with headaches, exhausted all the time, yawning all day. I would wake up feeling like I had never gone to bed at all.

1 month later, I actually wake up BEFORE my alarm clock, am sleeping through the night without having to get up and pee (been getting up a 2 times a night for years...), can hold a coherent and cheerful conversation at 7am (hubby wants to know where his wife went and who I am)....I have more energy than I have had in decades, and have not quite figured out how to handle that yet....<grin>

My cardiologist will probably not know how to handle it, but he is getting a huge hug when I see him next time.

If you ever went to an all night "Lock In" as a teen, how I felt after playing all night and not sleeping .. was nothing compared to how it felt to "sleep" before CPAP. Welcome

I started with 1 alarm clock, and over the years added...
-a light on a timer that turns on about 20 minutes before the alarm clock goes off,
-a second alarm clock across the room so I have to physically get up to turn it off or hit snooze, and
-a vibrating puck,

I could probably cut back to 1 alarm clock now that I'm on CPAP, but I can't cut the cord just yet.

Wow that sounds like the path I was taking....

I have a (full-spectrum) light on a timer....and a two stage alarm clock...and had recently added another alarm clock.

The first alarm clock starts off as radio, but after 10 minutes it switches to beeping. Around that same time, my light comes on..... The more recent addition is one of those Neverlate alarm clocks. First a Radio and then an alarm....

I was finding that I could turn off my first alarm clock without waking up or having any recollection of doing so.

Now I have cut back to the original alarm clock....and the light. Though they go off about the time when the second set of alarms would be going off.

The old alarm clock has moved to the other side of the bed, so its a little hard to get to....in that I have to remove my mask before I can get to it. But, it is over there because the cpap and humidifier had displaced it and now something else has moved into the space (sound machine).

The Dreamer.

I now suspect anyone who says, "I am not a morning person", has sleep apnea and should get a PSG.

My mantra used to be, "I am not a morning person, midday person or evening person."

I am still a newbie here. I self-admitted myself to a sleep center knowing full well Ihad sleep apnea based upon what I had read and how I felt during the day. I would wake up sometimes gasping for air. My heart would be racing. And I never felt rested from the night's sleep. Much of my problem has been large amount of weight gain in a short period of time.

The very first morning after being on my APAP (which was a Saturday morning-typical sleep in day) I got up at 7:30 and began cleaning house. My wife could not believe it. But I was refreshed and full of energy. I cannot explain it except it has been at least 3 years since I have felt that good. I turn 56 this weekend and I know 2009 will be a good year already.

So, yes, I have experienced what you have as it appears most pre-CPAP users will tell you.

Yes, that is often reported by men as one of the bad side effects of CPAP therapy.

Seriously GW, congratulations on the quick improvement.

Remember, if you do a domestic chore , do it so poorly your spouse begs you not to attempt it again. When ever I go near the sink Linda throws a body block between me and the dishes worthy of a packer lineman ( bad George, bad bad George;)
