Memory Foam Bed Topper

Post by DoriC » Tue Jan 13, 2009 7:03 pm

Thinking of buying a 3" foam topper to go on top of mattress. Can fitted sheets still be used? Would we need a larger size sheets? Thanks,

Hi DoriC!
I have a foam topper on my bed and use fitted sheets. The fitted sheet you would use would have to be one with a deep pocket (13" to 16"I think would do it) . Fitted sheets come with different pocket depths. You need to have one with a deep enough pocket to cover your topper and your mattress.

I don't know how clear that is!! It makes sense to me because I have it but, when I read what I typed, I'm not sure I described it very well!!

We have 4" toppers on two beds. No problem with fitted sheets.

Hi Hawthorne, your description just reminded me that when I last bought sheets they were labeled "deep pockets" so it should be OK. We've almost ironed out the important things after 4 long months so now we're looking at comfort stuff.

Thanks Sam, off to Costco tomorrow to buy a topper, they're on sale I think.

Hey Nate, send me a link for that air topper.

BTW, for those of you contemplating entire memory foam BEDS, check into the knock offs. Visco is visco - don't shell out for the name brand if you can find a local supplier for less. My Mom has been sleeping on "knock offs" for the past 15 years. Not a problem in the world. BF has a knock off. Albeit it's a FULL, and I've demanded a KING if we get married.

My little 2 inch topper from Target is pretty much worthless after 3 years. I think the trick is to go 4 inch to get any kind of lasting benefit.

BTW, most sheets made today are made automatically with deep pockets. You'd have to go find an old used sheet set to find a problem.

BUT, if you DO have a problem - just use a mis-matched bottom sheet, or use a top sheet folded around, like hospitals and motels do. You can even secure them with twist pins, if you're super paranoid about them shifting.

Cheers,
B.

I slept on a 3" topper for a year and although comfy, it tended to make hotter than I usually get in bed.

If you get one, roll it out and leave it in room for a week to air out.

Well, I'm just CONTEMPLATING marriage. Nothing's carved in stone. Okay, I DID ask him to marry me a few months ago, when I discovered he'd never owned any Star Wars action figures in his life, and that, coupled with never having been married, and no kids and doesn't want any, and a good job, and nice parents, was too much for me, and I asked him to marry me.

He didn't reply.

But he is wearing a "training ring," as am I. We both bought our own rings, however...

LOL,
B.

Bab, if he wants someone who will make him laugh every day, he'll say YES right now. Give me his email address and I'll get after him! Oh, BTW, hubby tried a memory foam topper that was on display at Sears and he couldn't turn from side to side. He's quite disabled and seemed to sink right into it. So I guess I'll look further, maybe latex foam, I was told that's better.

Dori, I'm sending him your reply!

Well, what's behind your desire for a bed topper? What's wrong with your current mattress?

If the memory foam doesn't allow him to turn, you might want to look at a standard egg-crate style topper, readily available at most medical supply stores, Target, etc. Those used to be the big seller before they came out with memory foam toppers.

There are also down-filled, and synthetic-down filled toppers. Each feels a little different. You can put those terms into google and find alot of info and pix online about them.

Good luck!
B.

Dori - I just replied about mattress toppers and sheets in general. I didn't know your husband was somewhat disabled. As you know, I am somewhat disabled too and did not do well on the memory foam topper either. I sank right into it as well, making it difficult to get up in the morning.

I went back to the "egg crate" type of mattress topper that Babette mentioned. I have no problems with it. It's very comfy and I can get out of it easily.

I have one with 3 zones. It has different support levels for the shoulders/head, the hips and the legs. I really like it.

I should have mentioned that in replying to your other post but you were asking about sheets fitting and I didn't have this further information. Sorry!

I once tried a memory foam topper...I recall they were all the range in infomercials then. Though I bought a cheap one online. I kept the same sheets, but they fit tighter. Bedroom stank of chemicals for a week or so.

But, I think I found some value in it and used it for about a year. For years people were telling me I should probably get a new mattress. I finally did. Got a pillow top mattress, so didn't need the foam topper anymore. New mattress was so much thicker that I did have to get new sheets to fit it.

That old mattress? It was over 20 years old when I finally replaced it. Don't recall what kind of 'life' mattress it was.

Now I do expect to get at least 20 years out of my new mattress, but it has a 20 year warranty on it....

The Dreamer.

We've been using that egg crate topper with 3 zones for awhile and we like it and he says he's comfortable but I just wanted to know if there was something even better out there to make it "just right" for him. He has shrapnel in his hip down to the bone and had multiple surgeries during the war and many more recently when the shrapnel decided to rear its ugly head after all these years. They succeeded in removing some of the pieces but he developed a chronic osteomyelitis(infection) besides losing even more hip muscles. He took antibiotics for about a year after his last surgery and thank God, no flareups for the past 2 years although it is difficult for him to walk too much and he uses a cane. His unusual case has been written up in an orthopedic journal and some VA publication as well as our local newspapers. So now you know why I want the best comfort for him. He really deserves it.

My wife and I are enjoying our topper. It is firm on one side and soft on the other. We have had it for 1 1/2 years. I found our mattress to be to firm for me.

Have you tried one of those Select comfort air beds? They allow you to adjust the firmness and seem to be easy to get in and out of. Just a thought.

I hope that your husband finds a way to be comfortable. I remember trying to sleep with a broken ankle and supporting boot... not fun. But nothing compared to your husband's injuries.
