heheh, that was interesting to read, rooster. Got tickled when I read this:

"The key will be finding the best mask. I used a basic mask for years and never had a problem. The old style was fairly firm and the head strap needed to be adjusted so that the mask was on firmly. They offered me a new style a couple of years ago. The new one doesn't push down on your face like the old style. It's meant to be loose fitting until the CPAP is turned on and then it rises a little while covering the nose. It's almost like a hovercraft skirt if that makes any sense."

Makes perfect sense to cpaptalk'ers. He's describing the ResMed Activa mask. Hovercraft skirt! Same mask I've seen described on apnea message boards as "a lovesick octopus doing pushups on your face."

The guy's right -- "The key will be finding the best mask." He's tellin' 'em right.

I am seeing CPAP discussions on many non-related forums, like the poker chip form, the 350Z forum, the tractor forum, a hunting forum, a fishing forum, of course weight loss forums, dating forums, a veterans forum, etc.

I am encouraged that sleep apnea will become the number one health issue and the media will finally catch up and give it attention. We need awareness to grow rapidly.

Here was an interesting discussion on a Boy Scouts forum: http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThrea ... dID=185881

Some good advice and some bad advice. Scouts, of all people, should know not to put the kid at risk.

I wonder what the kid did?

The things you find, Rooster! Such interesting reading!

Am dreading when you find one that talks about pantyhose. Like the one Slinky and CollegeGirl found!

RG,

You need to get on some of the other forums. Plenty of people like this guy need help understanding your instructions on pantyhose for securing the mask. He could also use your help on rainout issues.

When I was schedules for my 1st sleep study, I made a post on a fishing website I frequent asking if anyone had endured this crazy sounding overnight sleep study thing. Turns out quite a few had or had family members who did. For the most part they all told me it was no big deal and that if I did end up on cpap it would work wonders. Long story short, they basically put me in a much better state of mind and both my PSG studies went fairly well all things considered. Always good to talk to folks who share similar interest and who may also share similar medical conditions.

Interesting discussion. Almost sounds like some we have had on this board. The only thing I keep wondering about is what rooster was doing on the Poker Chip Board? Were you trying to gain some inside information to make enough money to buy a new CPAP machine?

Rooster, when you find sleep apnea discussions on other forums couldn't you sign on as a guest and direct them to CpapTalk?

Bonnie,

Have faith. The ole Rooster does post on internet sites from time to time. Some examples:

Go register and post at the free forum, cpaptalk.com. Very knowledgeable people there who are intimately involved and would like to help you.

The moderators rarely intervene so be prepared for a "wide open" approach.

Good luck.

Reply to an article recommending "home remedies":
There is a word to describe people who use home remedies for sleep apnea: deceased.

Get educated on this destructive, deadly condition. Not one out of onehundred people can ‘cure’ sleep apnea by losing weight.

Get screened by an MD familiar with sleep apnea (many MDs are ignorant of sleep apnea), get a sleep study and start a treatment. CPAP is the gold standard treatment for sleep apnea. Oral appliances work for a few people with mild cases. Surgery is typically ineffective, has a very painful recovery and leaves permanent unwanted side effects. The one exception for surgery is some children can be treated successfully by removing tonsils and adenoids.
I like much of what you are saying in the short article. However, sleep apnea is a very serious condition and everyone who has symptoms should see a doctor!

Once sleep apnea is treated by a qualified M.D., then it might be nice to try some of your techniques for relaxing.
These are indications of sleep apnea. Get screened for it.

No, the media is not onto something new. Sleep apnea has been killing our friends and relatives all along. Their death certificates always listed cause of death as heart attack or stroke or complications from type 2 diabetes. The medical profession has really missed this serious health problem.

All our doctors know is pharmeceuticals and surgery. Sleep apnea is typically not treated with pharmeceuticals or surgery. So the docs were ignorant of it. I even know two doctors who themselves suffered with sleep apnea for years without knowing what was wrong. Now they found out, are getting cpap treatment and are screening and finding dozens of their patients have had it for years.

You go to poker forum and I hang out at Golf forums. Two of the golf forums I frequent have had extensive discussions on sleep apnea. I always turn the folks onto this site.
