Bretahing problems in morning

Post by Kayla43 » Wed Dec 31, 2008 11:07 am

I am awaiting a sleep study because for the past couple of weeks I have noticed that when I wake in the morning I feel out of breath and my heart is racing, and I am sleepy during the day. I am wondering however, why I stay out of breath for a couple of hours after I wake, it almost feels like I am holding my breath. I know sleep apnea are issues when sleeping-so why would my symptoms continue when I am awake? Any advice would be helpful and I look forward to joining this community for future help/advice. Thanks and Happy New Year!

What is your general physical condition: weight, level of activity and exercise, diet, other health problems?

If you do have sleep apnea you are likely "loaded up" with adrenalin for several hours after morning awakening. This can cause anxiety which can cause a feeling of "out of breath".

How soon is your sleep study scheduled?

Thanks for the response. I agree with what you said about being "loaded with adrenaline". I am definitely overweight-5'2" and around 200 lbs. I am usually too tired to work out so I have been slowly gaining weight the past year. I have been diagnosed with acid reflux and take Protonix. I am scheduled for a sleep study January 12th. The staying of breath during the day is pretty scary, I have gone to a pulmonolgist and was tested for asthma which was negative. Also have had an echocardiogram which came out fine. For a time I was waking up with either chest tightness or stomach feeling bloated as well. It's been pretty horrible. I need to find out what is going on and get treatment as soon as possible.

Well you have a couple of good things going, so get that sleep study and see what the next steps are. If you have sleep apnea and give it a good therapy, you may be amazed at how many other health and quality of life issues will dramatically improve.

If you do find out you have sleep apnea or any sleep disordered breathing condition then register here and keep in touch.

Those where part of my symptoms also, I always felt it due to Co2 build because I hyperventilated which gave me anxiety and then the adrenaline.
Improper sleep caused sleep deprivitation and the symptoms that come with it.
CPAP therapy has lessen or remove those symptoms.
Hang in there and get as much exercise as you are able to release those chemicals
from your body . Know there will be relief on CPAP
I had all the tests also.
Welcome to the best board around.
