SHEA BUTTER for nasal congestion?

Post by garyland » Tue Dec 23, 2008 6:53 am

Has anyone used Shea butter for nasal congestion? If so, did it work?

No, I had never heard that it might.......until your post made me curious.

I did a search, and the first result was a 1979 published paper saying that study participants found some relief!!!

j,

thanks for that very informative info on Shea butter. I just ordered some from http://WWW.sheabutterhut.com. Sounds exciting! There are other sites as well where you can buy it.

You can find shea butter in the drug store aisles, even some grocery stores in my area; it is also used as an ingredient in many skin and hair care products.

The shea butter in the stores in your area are they 100% pure shea butter or do they have additives in them?

Our area has "shea butter" for sale but it is usually just an ingredient in something else such as lotions, etc. although the label states it is shea butter it is only one ingredient in many.

When I am out today, I plan on reading a few labels.

I just ordered today the UNREFINED RAW Shea butter. Nothing else in it (that I know of). If you buy 2 jars you get 1 jar free. Each jar is $7.95 (8oz size).

I irritate my kids (they are grown) with constantly reading labels.

Of course many of the ingredients I really have no idea what they are.

Still makes interesting reading to see what we are ingesting and putting on our bodies.

I've been ordering raw organic bulk shea butter from sheabutterhut.com for years. I went to re-order today and was surprised to find my comments on the product, from three years ago, right on their home page. This is some great stuff and I use it all the time. But I had not thought of sticking it up my nose! I'm certainly going to try that before I try turbinate reduction surgery.

Thanks for bringing up the subject, Gary.

I use 100% pure shea butter for my dry feet and it works well for that and other things. I'm a little cautious about putting it in my nose because it feels like it is some kind of oil and there are slight risks to putting oily stuff in one's nose. See the info here:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/petrol ... ly/AN00947

I've seen shea butter in many forms - most are 10% or 20% shea butter but it is definitely possible to get 100%. Another place to get that is from L'Occitane (brand) -- try sephora.com or beauty.com

You do not put this stuff in your nose. My understanding, and i could be wrong, is that you put it ON your nose and around your nostils, not in. Maybe someone can investigate this for us.

Even if it's just outside the nose you can still breathe vapors from it.

My understanding is that the "vapors" are non-toxic. I did look closer at the study that was done in 1979. The subjects were giving 2-4 grams of shea butter on their cleaned finger and were told to apply it to the inside of the nostril (not deep in). If you are concerned, you could just coat your finger a little and put the "essence" of the butter in your nostril and not a glob of it. There is no way it could ever get in your lungs that way. A glob may be different.
