Longtime CPAP user, new to this site. Hello Everyone.

Post by Nealbopper » Thu Dec 18, 2008 11:33 am

I AM NOW A MEMBER.....Hello, my name is Neal. I'm 43, after a jet ski accident left my face crushed, I have had several operations. 3 on my septum alone. (Don't worry, I'm still as handsom as ever. JK) I have been using my CPAP for 14 years now. Several sleep studies and supplies up the wazoo, I have tried just about every product coming down the line the last few years. I have a back up Resperonics, PLUS machine with a flow over humidifier and a comfort classic nose mask. (Small) My doctor set my pressure at 7 and that has never worked. Felt like i was breathing through a snorkel. So i took my machine into the guy at the supply store to change it. It was his last day there, he changed my setting to a 10. It has been set there and everything has been trouble free for the last 10 years. Well, i tipped my machine over and it's giving me the ERROR 14 code. Out of warrenty now so i ordered a new one with a prescription from my doctor. There is no record of my machine being re-set so the new machines set at 7. I can't sleep.
I called the doctor but he's on vacation until the new year, That will not due!
My new machine is a S8 elite II with a humidifier. Does anyone know how to adjust the pressure setting? It came with a CD, would the instructions be on there? Haven't had time to watch it yet as i just got the machine last night. I have read the prior posts and am happy to know i will not be arrested for breaking the law. Just let them tell me I cant adjust my own machine, i dare them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Neal P.S. I never knew this forum was out there, I'm glad to have found you all.

Welcome aboard!!! Glad you found us!

I'm Babette, I'm 44, and I have OSA that is probably aggravated by neck fat. I've been on the hose since April 2007. I think I've had OSA all my life, it just got SEVERE with the last 75 pounds.

You'll meet all kinds of interesting, charming, weird, and extraordinary people here.

Welcome!
B.

Welcome bopper Neal

ResMed S8 Series
To get into the provider setup mode in a ResMed S8 CPAP machine - such as the S8 Compact, S8 Elite or S8 AutoSet Vantage - follow these steps:

Press the right and down arrows simultaneously for about 3 seconds until the "Clinical Menu" appears on the screen

Use the up and down arrows to cycle through the settings and use the left "soft key" to select "Change" or use the right "soft key" to "Exit" from the Clinical Menu.

Supply store: Dumb Medical Equipment (DME) provider -- The ones that take your money because they think you are foolish enough to let 'em.
Sleep study guys: Registered Technocrats (RT) -- The ones that threaten to trun you into the authorities for changing the settings on your machine.

Some of the most common are:
DME - durable medical equipment provider (I think what you call the supply store)
R/T - respiratory therapist (person other than your doctor who helps you with supplies, mask fitting, machine settings)
PSG - polysomnography (one of those sleep studies where you were wired up the wahzoo)
AHI - apnea-hypopnea index or incidents (AI + HI)
AI - apnea index (AI)
HI - hypopnea index (AI)

New BF told me I had to rein in the cyber-fawning.

But just between you and me, you're quite charming and interesting.

LOL,

Am I going to have to go over there and put him back in his position?

Welcome Neal,
Enjoy! I have chuckled more in the last two days reading some of these posts than I have in a long time. Thanks everyone.

No No! I'm the only one allowed to beat him senseless.

I can whip him in close quarters, but as he likes to point out, he can out run me any day.

BTW, he ran the Seattle Marathon in 4 hours 59 minutes on 11/30/08. I'm so proud!

Hi, Nealbopper. Welcome to the forum! There's a great list of acronyms in "Where A CPAP Newbie Should Start," which is in the Announcements section just above the list of current threads. You only need to read the first post, because Jules incorporated additional comments made by others into her original post.

Welcome Nealbopper. I am glad you registered and introduced yourself. It is good to have a newcomer with a lot of experience.

DreamStalker gave you the acronyms straight. There are a few good DMEs. One of the good web DMEs is cpap.com the owners of cpaptalk.com. If your insurance is paying for everything, your local brick-and-mortar DME may suffice for you. If you have to pay for something yourself please checkout cpap.com. Members here will be glad to give you tips on purchasing specific items.

Any relation to The Big?

Welcome, Neal, to a great place to be for OSA. I, like you have been on the hose for a long time, but until I found these guys my treatment was only mediocre, at best. Nice to have you aboard.
