Pros / Cons of xPAP

Post by ehusen » Fri Jul 15, 2005 11:29 am

Hey, I was curious at to what your own experiences are using xPAP to treat your apnea. I've been searchng the net for studies and such about the good/bad of xPAP and there seems to be a lot of conflicting/inconclusive data. Right now what I generally garner is that apnea MAY cause: high BP, depression, overweight, lethargy, daytime tiredness, and sudden death. But the solid evidence for this doesn't seem to be quite there yet. Also, the long term helpfulness of xPAP is still in question as well, IMHO.

So let's forget all that silly science stuff and ask what has been good/bad for you the users of these medieval torture devices.

I'll start.

time using xPAP: 6 weeks on APAP machine, 4-20cm

BAD/NEUTRAL STUFF:
No real change in BP so far. I'm borderline and on slight meds for it. I stick around 140/80 and can go up from there at times.

No real weight change. I'm about 50lbs too heavy. (But I don't quite believe the "magic nights good sleep allows you to lose weight ...") Guess I'll have to go with that icky diet/exercise option.

No big change in "sleepiness". Well I wasn't one of those who was totally exhausted anyway. But I do get a bit tired in the afternoons...

Mask/hookup is still occasionally annoying difficult. Most nights it's okay but every so often it drives me crazy.

GOOD STUFF:
I don't snore anymore. This makes my wife quite happy as her ears were starting to hurt from the usage of ear plugs.

According to my wife I don't toss and turn as much.

So far I've not had any acid reflux like symptoms. This was pretty rare before but occasionally I would get that burning sensation and sometimes it would even wake me up. But 6 weeks isn't long enough to guarantee that it is preventing the episodes.
