can this make things worse.... and what are the side effects for prolong use

Please give us more details.

Are you putting the vaporsteam in your humidifier on you cpap? If so stop doing that as it will create more problems than it will solve.

You can try to add a few drops to a cotton ball and set the cotton ball near the intake of your machine -- but I don't know how safe that is.
