Activa LT Condensation & Noise

Post by daveuk » Sun Nov 30, 2008 8:12 am

Is anyone having the same problem with condensation when using the new Resmed Activa LT mask?

The issue is not the condensation per se, which I'd expect in winter, but the fact that it partially blocks the vent holes, causing a loud whining noise that wakes me up.

The original Activa mask has a silicone vent cap with much bigger holes, and even when condensation is present there's no noise.

I've tried the obvious things like reducing the humidity setting, and heating the room more at night. But when set to provide adequate humidity I still get the problem. You lose humidity when there's condensation in the tube anyway, so a higher setting is needed in winter.

One of our members came up with a very ingenious solution for that very problem. Can you put put in a couple of key wrods in the seach feature, top left?

Oh, sorry. I didn't know those were available yet. So they are not as good as the original?

I didn't realize those were avilable yet either. Looks like I'll have to buy a lifetime's supply of the old Activa seals and parts now. Why fix it if it ain't broke?! What they should have done instead was to make the FULL FACE version. Is Resmed stupid or what?!

Anyway so daveuk - i haven't heard anything about this new mask on the forum yet, so I'm guessing many people haven't tried it yet. So don't be surprised if you don't get any reponses.

Have you tried the old Activa as well? Would you mind giving a small comparison/review between the two? thanks.

As for the rainout... you might have to go for the heated hose?? Also check that the whining isn't coming from somewhere else -- i notice that old hoses can also cause the same noise if they have a small invisible leak/tear in them.

Thanks for your replies.
I have been using the original Activa mask since it was available around 4 years ago. When I called to order a replacement I was offered the Activa LT for £30 less than the original model, so I ordered the new one.
It's a simpler design, without the short hose, a shallower cushion, and the rotating elbow/vent part is entirely made of hard plastic with a circle of very small vent holes.
I used it for a couple of nights without a real problem, other than a bit of increased vent noise compared to the old model.
Then we had freezing cold nights for the last couple of weeks. When the room temperature fell below about 68F/20C condensation forms around the vent holes. The holes are smaller than the water droplets, so flow around the vent holes. The disturbed airflow makes a whistling/whining noise that is loud enough to waken me.
I have found no problems at all with the original Activa mask. The new model appears to me to be made down to a price, as it has no functional advantages I can see, just fewer and simpler parts. The vent elbow in particular is a much simpler design, without the soft silicone vent cover.
I've now re-ordered the original model plus a spare cushion.
The CPAP technician at the hospital, who I saw coincidentally last week, told me that the National Health Service are about to order Activa LT masks for free issue to patients.
If you live in an area where you don't get cold winters, or you heat the room above 68F at night, then there's no problem apart from heating bills but you'll save £30 on the mask.
