newbie with nosy mask

Post by bagpipe » Thu Nov 27, 2008 8:31 am

Hello everyone. I have a newbie question. I just had my 2nd night at home with my CPAP machine which I have on a one month trial. I was diagnosed with mild OSA. My CPAP pressure is 8. I was at the Sleep Clinic on Monday evening for my CPAP evaluation. Even with all of the sensor wires hooked up and sleeping in strange bed, I had the most refreshing, restorative sleep I've had in 6 months, so I know the CPAP machine should work for me.
its been a different story since getting my CPAP machine at home. I've been unable to get a decent sleep. I've read, and been told, that it can take a while to get used to the machine. The problem I'm having is this kind of high pitched whistling noise that the mask/tube makes. I'm very easily "distracted" when trying to fall asleep. I'm getting a good seal with my mask, but where the tube click-connects to the mask is kinda loose (I think its designed that way) and it makes an annoying noise. I'm wondering if its the design of the mask? I realise that its only been 2 nights that I've been trying to use the machine at home. I'm trying to decide if I should suck it up, or if I should be looking at a different machine/mask ?

That Resmed S8 II Elite w/EPR is one heck of a good device. Is this the same mask you used during your in-lab titration? Since you had such good luck sleeping during your titration I would think you would continue to do best w/the same mask. If it is the same mask then you may have a defective connection on it and need to replace either the connection or the mask itself for another of the same style. These would be my first guesses. Go back to your DME for assistance. Don't be bashful, that is what they are there for. Be diplomatic, but be firm. They're being well paid by your insurance for this assistance.

You say that piece is loose - it's possible it's either broken or not seated properly as it's not supposed to be 'loose' and shouldn't be too noisy - I've got the UM FF and have had similar problems. I can't tell from here (obviously!) what's what, but if you call Cpap.com (or wherever you got it) or go to the DME, they can either look at it or talk you through an assessment of the part to see what's wrong.

Hello & Welcome, bagpipe! Glad you found this forum--SO much useful info and SO many helpful people here!

Sounds like something is lose or broken on your UMFF mask--I use the same mask, and it doesn't rattle or make a noise where the hose connects. I'd suggest taking it back to your DME to be checked. Good luck!
