Correct mask, machine, and size makes ALL the difference

Post by Mickeyd » Thu Nov 20, 2008 10:46 am

I started out with the nasal pillows but after a few nights my nose was to sore to use them another night. The I went to the Resmed mask and that was a little better but I found later in the night I would tend to breath through my mouth so I went to the Mirage Quattro face mask. I was fitted for a medium but had constant battles with air leaks and I had to wear it so tight I had a sore above the bridge of the nose and marks on my forehead from the rubber pad. I then went to a small Quattro mask and my problems are over. I have almost NO air leakage, and I don't need to mask so tight so less pressure on the nose bridge. When I went to the local resmed dealer they suggested buying some "MOLEFOAM" from a loal dept. store and putting a strip of it on the forehead pad and that works great! It is soft but firm and distributes the area on the forehead for support. I also use the RESMED Auto set which I wouldn't do without. It eleminates the constant back pressure when you exhale and it measures each breath for your needs so you aren't getting a lot more air than you need as your breathing varies during the night. You have to keep trying new things but in the end it's worth it. I'm a pretty good size guy, 6'2 and 255 lbs. so wouldn't have thought the small size would be right for me but I have heard others say the Resmed mask seem to run large compared to other mask so thought I'd try it. I hated my machine and mask at first but wouldn't even consider sleeping without it now.

Right on, MickeyD. Once they've determined your pressure needs THE MASK becomes the key to successful CPAP therapy. A comfortable, good fitting mask is essential to successful CPAP therapy.

If you had marks on your forehead it was because the upper straps were adjusted far too tight.

The only purpose tightening the upper straps servers is to mash that forehead pad harder into your head. It is actually the forehead dial knob where you make the adjustments as to how tight the upper part of the mask fits to your face.

Anyways... congrats on working through all the issues!
