CPAP vs. APAP and hypopneas vs. apneas?

Post by momexp5 » Fri Jul 08, 2005 2:28 pm

I thought I posted about this, but I can't find it, and my OSA-driven ADD is kicking in this afternoon :-/

What is the thing with "CPAP is better if you have mostly hypopneas"? Is this correct, and why would this be?

I wouldn't say that a plain CPAP is better than a properly adjusted APAP . I may be true if your range is set at 4-20. You must set your autos range for YOU. This may take software or just keeping a log of how you feel at different settings. Increase the lower pressure in small increments . Give it a week. Write down how you feel as well as using software to track your progress. You may find that your best range is very near to your titrated pressure. Or you may need much less most of the time.

Use of software isn't an option with most plain cpaps. Reason alone to use an auto.

Cheers,

Chris

momexp5,

Read this thread - you can come to your own conclusions. You have both the data, and the explanations in that thread.

PB GoodKnight 420E and hypopneas
Pay special attention to -SWS's explantations.

If you read Resmed about the Autoset's three lines of defence you will notice they do not ever mention hypopneas - I presume they include them in flow limitations.

It you want to go further into the subject, do a boolean search for "algorithm AND Respironics" with either -SWS or Derek as authors. You will find references to to Resipronics's patent application for the Auto.

Thanks so much, oz. It looks like just what I need to read. Not tonight, though, I am just too tired and I'm going to sleep.
