Need help with Mask Noise

Post by andy88488 » Thu Nov 06, 2008 10:45 am

Hi all,

I use a Resmed Ultra Mirage FF Mask. My girlfriend is a very light sleeper, and sometimes the normal venting noise of the mask keeps her awake. The leaks bother her too, but she knows the difference in sound.

The mask is about a year old. I did order a new vent piece, to see if it would help, but I wondered if anyone had any other suggestions or comments.

Is this a noisy mask? Are there notably quieter ones?

Thanks,
Andy

I'd suggest some sort of white noise. We have a HEPA air filter in our room, and the noise of it is a little louder than any CPAP noise from either the machine or the mask. There are also electronc white noise makers and some that you can put on your computer if that is in your bedroom.

I would think you are "eligible" for a new mask from your insurance company anyway so you could try that and see if there is a difference between the two. It's always nice to have a backup anyway.

Hang in there!

Yeah, unfortunately she can't sleep with white noise either. I thought of that, too.

l do have a backup mask. I may give that a try.

My wife tells me she likes hearing the mask noise because she doesn't have to worry if I am going to start breathing again, when I am having an apnea. She also has said that the noise from the machine and the mask is MUCH less than my snoring was.

Maybe helping your girlfriend to see this as a positive thing for your health and longevity would help.

Love this! And, those bothered by our mask vent noise could think of it as white noise : )

She does see it as a positive. She likes it when I am with her. But the noise of the mask keeps her awake.

UM has become my mask of choice also.
Yes, it is the vent that creates the "leak noise."

Here is what I have discovered about the masks I have.
In trying to find/stop the leak noise, I teflon taped
the elbow joint and the swivel joint. My leak rate
dropped from 39 to 35. The leak noise increased and
was unbearable.
At 4am last Sat. am, I could not take it anymore......
I got up and started changing pieces and parts.
I have 3 UM masks. The exhaust vent was the last piece
that I would have suspected. .....so after changing all the
other parts: elbow, anti-asphyxia vent, elbow, swivel and
seals, I went after the exhaust vent.
As soon as I put a different vent on, the noise changed,
ever so slightly. I put the third one on and the noise
changed, ever so slightly.
I retaped the elbow and swivel and the noise increased.

....so now, I have untaped joints, standard leak rate and
the standard "leak noise" that I will learn to live with,
because this mask works very well for me.

......that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Hope this helps, somehow.

.....also, I can field strip these masks to individual parts
in less than a minute and reassemble it in about 4 minutes.
"If your therapy is improving your health but you're not doing anything
to see or feel those changes, you'll never know what you're capable of."
I said that.

I have been using one of those for years and love the mask. I don't love the wind blowing out neither does my girlfriend or dogs. THe only thing I found is that I throw the hos over my head or shoulder. Other wise I blows on me and I freeze my ass of as well.
