Soyala

Post by nightjar » Sun Nov 02, 2008 8:12 pm

A question (for Snoredog and others, perhaps) about the Soyala nasal mask: does the exhaust run back up the outside of the hose? The description I read at the Somno or Aeio site made me think that, but it'd be good to have it verified.

And . . . any idea how it's pronounced? I''ve been pronouncing it as if it's Finnish, with the accent on the first syllable, but I doubt that's right. (Sure sounds nice that way, though!)

Anyway, I'm looking to replace my Ultra Mirage, and the Soyala intrigues me.

The soyala exhausts through the ring around the elbow connection in front.

The somnoplus exhausts down the hose just above where the swivel connector with the main hose is.

Perhaps this thread will help some.

As Jules indicated it exhausts around the round silicone retaining ring that holds the swivel elbow to the main frame. That ring has cogs on it spaced around the ring where it meets the main frame. The space is held at 360 degrees so the exhaust air is diffused parallel with the mask 360 degrees.

I'd say its exhaust rate is lower than other masks and if you put your hand around that ring you cannot really detect where the exhaust gas is escaping from. SO there is no worry about it blowing on someone else for example. Other masks I've used put a strong stream of air out about 12" like the quattro, not with the Soyala you cannot detect any stream of air anywhere.

Remember: If you use a Small in other conventional nasal masks, get a Medium in the Soyala, if you current use a Medium, get a large as it has a tendency to run small.

the soyala FFM exhausts the same way as the soyala nasal - the ring around the center with a diffusion pattern

Thanks, Jules and Snoredog!

The link to the other post was very helpful, too, Jules.

I've downloaded the sizing chart and will be checking that out. My Ultra Mirage is a large, so I hope there's a Soyala that's big enough!

the soyala sizing chart isn't probably correct -

if you are looking for the nasal see if you can get info on the somnoplus as it is the exact same cushion - I did the measurements for it and got the size

for the FFM Soyala I was able to get the manufacturer to mail me the real sizing charts - when I compared it with what I had printed from offline --- they were way off -

Snoredog has posted info on the vertical distance from top of cushion to bottom under the nose for M and L and posted pictures of these masks over time - you might search his posts for that information specifically - for the small I can always measure mine both FFM and nasal as I own both

I am interested in trading a Fisher Paykel 432 for either a Soyala or Somnoplus nasal or FFM. I wore a Large FP 431 so from the sounds of SD below, I think I'd need at least a Large unless they make an extra-large.
If interested PM me with emale addy and model info.

Thanks, Jules.

Sure wish the XL was available in the US. From the measurements Snoredog gave for the L (2.25), I wonder if it'd be big enough for me.

Time to put some more hours on the blower. . . .

FYI: The nasal version is my favorite mask but I'm NOT a big fan of the FF version, I found the cushion uncomfortable to the point where I couldn't wear it. I'm hoping they come out with a better cushion for it. The old UltraMirage is more comfortable.

I don't care for the FF Soyala either FWIW but it is the only FFM I have really tried - I have a Liberty sitting on the table hoping it will be less toxic by the time I use it.

If you find that you need the XL, I can try to get it for you. I see that they have a distributor here in Belgium. I can check if they sell to patients. The cost will probably not be cheap, (a) taxes are higher here (b) euro-dollar exchange rate (though dollar is getting stronger) and (c) shipping rate - maybe around $10? Won't know until we ask... (alternately maybe they have measurements for it. I didn't see any sizing info on the weinmann site). Anyway let me know.
