Thanks everyone for the really kind words. The last two years have been been quite an experience. This forum has been a constant source of support (particularly during the first year when I was mostly on my own living in Ottawa and feeling very ill)

And the care he IS getting is better than the care those unfortunate enough to not have insurance in this country are getting. But the American way as become to not think about anyone but ourselves.

For the sake of those doing without, I hope we do get health care in this country soon.

I've actually given up waiting to get my nasal surgery done in Canada. I flew down to Ohio at the end of last week and am going back for the surgery on January 6th.

I think some type of hybrid system could work. I see health care as almost a human right and am not sure the US's model is right. I'm not sure people should be denied health care if they can't pay. But if someone is willing (like myself) I don't think that option should be disallowed as it is here in Canada. I think we need some type of two tired systems or something. I think both the US and the Canadian model need work...

What you speak of is a "positive" right.

Our Constitution protects certain "negative" rights such as the freedom of speech, the freedom to practice any religion, the freedom to assemble peacefully, etc. Negative rights do not require anyone to do anything for you. That just require that the government and your fellow citizens leave you alone to practice your right (as long as you don't interfere with their negative rights).

If you believe we should have positive rights you must go one step further and state who must perform the services that give you this positive right. In fact, you have to state who must perform the services, at what hours of the day, at what quality level, at what cost, etc. You will be treading on the negative rights of the people you name. They are no longer free to do what they want. This is not nice when governments tell you what to do with your time and energy. Things get very complicated, inefficient and ineffective. The people in power exercise that power and become corrupt. Over time things get nastier and nastier.

When it comes to my health I want people working on me who do it to earn money. I know that people who think they can make a profit off of their patients will generally do a much better job than people who show up at work as government employees. It is true that sometimes these people will not do a good job, after all they are human. But unlike government if they do a poor job long enough they will be out of business and better performing competitors will step in. Poor governments tend to go on and on until they are overthrown violently. You can imagine this is much nastier than a company simply going out of business.

In you country they are called DME's. They often sell you cheap machines that are not data tracking, becuase they earn more money that way than they do if they sell you the machines that are data capable. Someone recently called it "fleece their pocket".

MAP was forced on cpap.com by Resmed and Resprironics - big international conglomerates. I haven't seen many people boycotting them for it on this forum.

I also notice tons of complaints on this forum about doctors not caring about people, and the kind of cars they drive. But if they do it to earn money, that's what you would expect of them.

We are in agreement on that. "lets" is a critical verb in your sentence. I prefer mechanics who love working on cars, bakers who love making bread and doctors who love helping people heal. I try to weed out the others.

My impression of the people at cpap.com is that they love providing equipment at competitive prices with good customer service. May they prevail in the free market. God forbid that they be absorbed into a government health care system.
