New user, saying hello...with some questions...
Re: New user, saying hello...with some questions...
wow, sounds like you have a great support team!
You should definintely look to getting the card reader (many horror stories of cards getting screwed up at hte doctor's office, not being able to get a copy of the results, etc).
As for the alarm, that may or may not be a good idea. I would personally prefer to check the data the next day instead of a blaring alarm. I am assuming that if you have large leaks the alarm would also go off, beucease it can't tell the difference if the leak is due to a large leak or if the mask is just not on your face anymore.
But I don't know how to turn the alarm on.,.. maybe someone else will chime in.
keep at it!
Edit: by the way, what are your settings? If the initial pressure is too high at first, you can use the Ramp feature to start off at a lower pressure and slowly work your way up to your programmed pressure, for example in a timespan of 30 or 45 minutes.

Re: New user, saying hello...with some questions...
My pressure is set for 10cm. I tried the ramp feature last night, but only for 15 minutes. I will expand it tonight to 45 and see if that helps. I don't know why I didn't think of that! Thanks!
As for the alarm, I think you bring up a good point. The reason I didn't have him turn it on is that I didn't want to disturb my bed partner, but after talking to her about it, she was cool with having it go off in the middle of the night if necessary (she has been super supportive) but I would hate to wake wake her up just for a leak. I think I'll leave it off for now...
Thanks again!

Re: New user, saying hello...with some questions...
Phil, 10cm isn't too bad. I think you'll find that over time you'll get used to it. It's definitely hard at first! I'm now using 10.5, and anything below 8 makes me feel like I'm suffocating
Good luck, and GET THE CARD READER AND SOFTWARE (ok just kidding , not trying to be aggressive or anything )
In case you do want to turn on the alarm (or get into the clinical menu) - you might want to create a new thread with that in the title line, so it doesn't get lost in this thread.

Re: New user, saying hello...with some questions...
Thanks for the advice on starting a new thread. I did a quick search and found the instructions to get to the clinician's menu, it's amazing what you can find once you know the right terminology!
As for the card reader and software, I'm going to have to wait a bit for that. It might take a while before i can buy anything else after what I spent on this machine. I understand that it is a necessity for living a healthier life, but it is an expensive necessity...

Re: New user, saying hello...with some questions...
Phil,
Don't worry, you there are a lot of people reading. It sounds as if you are doing a lot of things right. Keep up the good work. It also sounds as if you might have a good doc and therapist. A LOT better than mine.
If you can afford it, I recommend that you buy the data card and software so you can see immediately, the next morning, exactly what went on during the night. I'm still learning by looking at my data each morning. With the same settings and mask, some nights I will be almost perfect and some nights bad, bad, bad. You can see WHEN the leaks occur during the night and how big they were, not just an average. Same with the apneas. I'm still discovering things that affect apneas like drinking coffee or wine after dinner or eating chocolate ice cream.
People on this forum can tell you how to turn on the Clinicians Menu for your machine and then you have access to everything. In my case, it was just holding 2 buttons down for 3 seconds.
I bought the ResScan software etc, from cpap.com. Medicare and ins. won't cover it because it is supposed to be only for the professionals.
Keep reading this forum because conquering apnea is like climbing Mt. Everest. One step at a time and before you know it, you're at the top.
Rested Gal, Your posts are awesome. I print them out and keep them in a file. I suspect you were/are a teacher and a darn good one. Did you ever think of writing a book on sleep apnea?

Well ya gotta do what ya gotta do, this stuff isn't cheap. You seem to be pretty self-sufficient (good call on the searching )and you've got a great attitude and enthusiasm, so I am sure you will do fine! Keep reading what you can - especially don't forget the goodies under "Our wisdom" above.

Re: New user, saying hello...with some questions...
Insurances DO require proof of compliance (use of your CPAP) to continue paying for the device and accessories. Until recently that could often just be provided by your signature on a form attesting to your using it. But many are now requiring "official proof" in the form of a download from the device.
It is true that your local DME supplier can't provide you w/the Resmed software w/o a script from your doctor to do so. However, it can be purchased w/o a script from online DME suppliers. The "catch" is that the S8 IIs need at least ResScan 3.4 (3.5 if you have Vista on your 'puter) and most online DME suppliers only sell v.3.3 But 3.4 and 3.5 can be found and purchased (you also need the proprietary reader cable for it).
The Resmed software can be used to erase the data or it can be set to NOT erase the data. If I remember correctly the software default is to NOT erase the data but I'm not going to swear to that. If you access the Clinician's Menu there is the option there to Erase Data. ALWAYS bypass that screen w/o making a change!!! Unless you WANT to erase the data.
Access to the Efficacy and Usage data needs to be scripted by your ordering doctor or the DME suppliers' RTs do not do so. I'm under the impression that they "can't" do so w/o the ordering doctor scripting that access. The access if simple enough: press the Left and Right buttons, hold for 3-4 seconds. Efficacy Data will appear on the LCD screen. From there on the button pushes are self-explanatory: Right button to Exit, Left button to Enter, Up button to return to the previous screen, Down button to proceed to the next screen. You can NOT accidentally or intentionally change your therapy settings from this menu so don't worry about that.
When you do learn to access the Clinicians' Menu, be sure before doing anything the first time thru it that you have a pen and paper handy and write down what appears on EACH screen before proceeding to the next screen or make any changes. That way if you do accidentally or intentionally make any therapy changes you will KNOW what the scripted settings were and can return to those scripted settings.
By the way: can "I" borrow your local DME supplier's RT? He sounds a whole lot more knowledgeable about these fully data capable CPAPs than mine!!!! And what he doesn't know about the S8s and S8 IIs it sounds like he is willing to read the Clinician's Manual and learn - unlike my local DME supplier's RT. A nice guy but .... *sigh*

Re: New user, saying hello...with some questions...
The link of Rested Gals list is an excellent reference. Since RG wrote it Fisher & Paykel have released an Auto and do do data recording on two
families of their machines.
It probably doesn't matter in regard to your choice but it is worth clarifying this availability of data recording F&P machines.
The two families are ...
http://www.fphcare.com/osa/cpaps.asp (See the HC608)
http://www.fphcare.com/osa/SleepStyle20 ... tStick.asp (See the HC244)
Both the above record detailed nightly data onto what F&P call the 'SmartStick' - a couple of other models
record compliance.
What is different is that the new F&P machines use USB sticks whereas all others (that I know of) use
smart cards of some sort or other. USB kind of allows any type of smartcard to be adapted using USB
adapter sticks.
Here are some F&Ps remarks confirming the software which is called PerformanceMaximizer.

Re: New user, saying hello...with some questions...
although i've used a cpap for a couple of years, i am realizing by looking at these forums that i am completely clueless as to what using a cpap means....i know what the physical cause is, what the effects are and that the cpap allows the airway to remain in a stable condition for the flow of breath. the reason i began to explore was because my titration went from 9 to 14. i use a nasal pillow and find that to be most comfortable for me, but i am overwhelmed by what appears to be my "lack of knowledge" about how this whole cpap thing works..I basically had the test, doctor ordered equipment, got set up and that was that...obviously there is more to it than i was aware of. I know about the ramping process, but there seems to be so much more about pressures and possible adjustments than i have ever been aware of...don't even know what questions to ask!!!!!my most recent sleep test was 5 weeks ago, yet with my new machine aqnd retitration i have yet to wake up feeling really rested w/out wanting a nap a few hours into my day....any advise would obviously help ....thanks in advance.

Colbertmoose I have a ? is there anyway to ajust the pressure on CPAP machine without having to go to Dr. to get it .
Re: New user, saying hello...with some questions...
Yes, ColbertMoose, there is. BUT, are you sure you need your pressure changed? Which direction, how much and why?
What brand and model CPAP do you have? What mask are you using. How well are you getting along w/that mask? Any problems w/it?
