Drooling

Post by pudellvr » Thu Oct 23, 2008 12:04 pm

I have always drooled and mouth breathed while sleeping, even as a teenager. I have been using CPAp for 2 years now. Often, it seems like as soon as I lay down to go to sleep my salivary glands go haywire and produce drowning amounts of saliva. I had tried the diy mouthguard but just couldn't handle the saliva with that thing in my mouth! I don't have a machine that gives me data, and although that sounds intriguing I can't afford a new machine until this one dies. I assume I have some leaks due to mouth breathing as I often wake up with cotton mouth.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Don't wait for your machine or yourself to die with improperly treated OSA. It's a matter of prioritizing your budget, your health, your life.

What exactly is more important than breathing that you have to wait for the machine to die?

Because most days I wake up feeling great and not like I had been on a 3 day drunk. (like before cpap) It is a matter of screaming priorities. I do not have the fiscal power of Congress.

If the treatment is mostly working I would tackle the mouth breathing first. Try taping your mouth or buy a full face or hybrid mask of some sort. Once you know that you're not leaking out your therapy, if you're still having troubles then try bumping your pressure up a tad. You might occasionally need a slightly higher pressure to prevent the apneas. I know on my APAP my 90% pressure fluctuates from 10.5 to 13 depending on my stuffiness.

I am not having stuffyness. I use the neti pot at night and humidify.

Would a full mask stop the drooling? Or just guarantee drowning due to not being able to swallow it all?

I am a cardiac RN and understand the benefits of CPAP. That is why I had my sleep study at 36 years old.
I am interested in getting help from those with more experience than I. I am very compliant with my therapy.

Thanks

Cool ... so you do have an understanding of your priorities.

Don't know if this helps but before I was diagnosed with severe OSA, I drooled alot (had to replace my bed pillows quite often) ... the day I began treating my OSA, the drooling stopped completely, as did the nocturia, head aches, body aches, snoring, ED, and uncontrollable weight gain and my cholesterol levels dropped like a rock as did the severity of my hypertension and daytime sleepiness and lethargic energy levels.

So back to the drooling ... maybe your OSA is not properly being treated? You really do need a data capable machine to know ... it is more than just intriguing, it is essential.

I am not sure. I had to pay oop for my first machine. I am checking into having BCBS pay for a new one. I cannot afford another sleep study. I would rather put the money into a data machine.

I just made some adjustments to my settings based on info rec'd here. Turned the cflex off and set ramp. Made a mouthguard. Felt great the first day off of cflex. Just feel good today and yesterday.
I have noticed a decrease in belly gas.

Thanks

I have always been somewhat of a drooler, but it feels like since I started with xPAP I've started drooling even more. Much more! I do have a data-capable machine, and I can tell that my therapy has brought my AHI down to ~3, so it's not a matter of my OSA not being treated.

I haven't figured out any solution for this - other than washing my poor drenched pillowcases and blankets much more often.

I have placed an order for a new cpap. Getting the Sandman auto hc. Unfortunately, the therapy software bit is on backorder. I am also getting a UM ffm. We will see how this affects my drooling.

Thanks
