Newly Diagnosed

Post by randyd501 » Sat Oct 11, 2008 7:23 pm

Hi all!
I am new to the site and want to thank you for having such a wonderful site that is very informative! I used to be a horrible snorer but about 6 years ago had my Uvula cut and that did alleviate a lot of my snoring sound.Anyway for years as far back as I can remember come around midday i would totally crash to the point where I must go to sleep and would stay in bed for the rest of the day and night. It had got to the point where and I could not take it anymore and I went to my doctor and he diagnosed me with depression prescribing me Lexapro and suggested doing a sleep study.I just had my sleep study done last week and was diagnosed with very severe sleep apnea. My apnea was at 60% on my side and 90% on my back...no idea what this means. I spent 2 nights at the clinic one without the Cpap machine and one with it with a full mask(i do sleep on my side most of the time). On Monday I have an appointment to go over the whole study and start a CPAP machine. When I was the clinic they had the Resmed machines there and I think that is the machine they will give me.
What are some of the questions I should be asking and suggestions on machine.

Amy input would be helpful! Thanks!

Welcome to the message board, Randy.

As for machines, if "cpap" is what you end up being prescribed (rather than "bilevel") here are the CPAP machines I'd insist on (not in any particular order):

Respironics REMstar Pro M series (not the "Plus")

ResMed S8 Elite or S8 Elite II (not the "Escape")

Puritan Bennett 420SP (not the "420G")

Covidien (Puritan Bennett) Sandman Info cpap (not the Sandman Intro cpap...be careful to note the difference in those similar model names.)

Those machines record full data -- info about how many apneas/hypopneas are sneaking through despite treatment and info about whether you're having excessive leaks.

The "not" machines will treat you the same as the recommended ones, but the "not" machines record only hours of use ("compliance") -- useless info if you really want to monitor your own treatment yourself. Add to the "not" list... any Fisher & Paykel machine. Hours of use are all the F&P machines record.

If you are prescribed a bilevel machine instead of a cpap machine, let us know and you'll get recommendations for those, too.

P.S. More so than the machine, the mask is going to be the most important key to being able to do this kind of treatment successfully. Hope your DME (durable medical equipment store) lets you keep swapping masks over and over and over again until you get one that suits you well.
