PICTURES ON OUR POSTS: MACHINE, HUMIDIFIER, SOFTWARE, ETC.

Post by neversleeps » Sat Jul 02, 2005 1:51 pm

Regarding the pictures we are now able to provide which appear on each of our posts if we so choose:

Does anyone else find this particularly annoying, or is it just me?

Couldn't we just put it in our profile so if another person wanted to know what we've got, they could just click on our username to see it?

Yeah, ditto. I turned that feature of my profile off today.

I hope you all like my avatar! My 11yo says it looks nothing like me, though - I guess it's one of those exaggerated cartoon versions. Still, kinda fun. http://avatarmaker.abi-station.com/index_en.shtml

I agree. I find the little postage stamp size equipment pics annoying. Reading the name of mask and machine that people use, and other bits of information in a signature is interesting, but those clickable picture thingies...

I even checkmark "Disable Auto Links in this post" before hitting submit. Still lets me put in whatever links I want to include in my post, but prevents the automatically added "cpapopedia" words down at the bottom.

People new to cpap probably find those clickable "features" handy while they learn about equipment and terms. My posts get too long anyway!

I also find the boxes annoying because one can not tell what equipment the individual is using.

I find a verbal description of the machine and masks interesting.

I'm glad you asked, neversleeps. I find the pictures annoying, distracting, and non-informative. I doubt even newbies would find them helpful...

Ok, based on everyones comments here I turned mine off too. Actually I thought the idea was a good one, that is a standard presentation of everyones equipment.

The implementation fell short. The pictures take up too much space and do not provide enough information. One or two lines of text really does convey much more information. Now if the pictures were exchanged for text, and the text linked to more detailed product pages we could have the best of both. This should be a simple and easy change to make in the design.

Very, very good idea, Ron. The text should be the actual model name of the machine, mask, humidifier.

I agree that those thumbnails are distracting. But I think they might also be taking up extra bandwidth which could better be used in messages and could also cause a site crash, maybe?

Glad they're gone!;)

But there is no picture of YOU

and the thumbnails of the equipment are too small to make out what they are of.

So we get a picture of a blank with some doodles.

JB - speaking of pictures - I have been wanting to put an avatar on my profile and have tried many time and also tried the Ask Question button on the site and emailed the webmaster (is it stephen?) asking for help, but got no replies.
How do you do it?
When I try to browse and choose one from my desktop, then hit submit, nothing happens. When trying to use "show gallery" - nothing comes up.
Can you (or anyone) help?

I think knowing what kind of equipment someone has is useful when answering their questions.

I think you're absolutely right, SleepyGuy.

Reading the name of the mask and machine right there while looking at the message would be more useful (imho) than seeing the words "machine", "mask", etc. over little pictures that have to be clicked.

I personally I quite like the pictures as I can click on them to see what people are using. I am not sure how to set mine own up though.

As long as it does not make the site crash though, as someone suggested in their post.
