How often should I change my mask

Post by AMANN » Thu Sep 18, 2008 11:27 am

I know I heard something about changing your mask every 4 to 6 months. What do you think the longest you can go without changing it? I had mine for about 6 months, and I am thinking maybe that's why it's leaking more.

It's all individual preference. I've made them last a year and a half before. Regular cleaning helps so it doesn't get icky over time. New mask brings a more "tacky" face cushion to the picture so that may improve seal. Also new mask straps are always comforting because they aren't all stretched out and they don't stink.

I've been using my original UMFF (original everything) for over three years and it's still doing a good job.

I'm still using my original ComfortGel mask though I do have multiple flaps and cushions that I rotate through. I used the medium for about 6 months and have been rotating between 2 smalls lately. I have a new mask but have yet to use it.
I also have been using a Headrest mask -- I got it last September 1st so it's a year old. I rotate through 3 different nasal interfaces -- 2 Large and 1 XL (The XL seems to work best at times)......I also have a second headrest that's still in the box.
So I guess the bottom line is that I have yet to wear one out.
Looking at the calendar, I've used the CG mask 5 nights this month, and the HR mask 9 nights -- 2 with the large pillows and 7 with the XL pillows.......(I didn't track the first 3 days of Sept. -- just set up the system)

cheers

Hi AMANN,

I have been a 100% compliant APAP user since January 2005 and still use the same Activa mask. It works fine but does tend to look a little gungy and the headgear is on it's last legs. I turn out the lights at night just so nobody will see just how awful the damn thing looks, you can never tell who is sneaking into your bedroom from one night to the next!

Had always intended to get a second mask for back up but never did as the Activa works very well for me. I do think it's life span is near the end and will probably get another one of the same this year. My original supplier calls every year to sell me something. This year I asked them about mask lifespan and she said to replace every six months. This is just a bunch of bunk and their only objective is more sales. In Canada they were selling for around $350 so it seems to me they should last a lot longer than six months.

Unless you're entering the local fashion mask contest I would suggest you make do for at least two years. And don't forget, the more you wash and tinker with it, the sooner it will break. I wash my mask roughly every 6 to 8 weeks wheather it needs it or not. If it gets a little stinky or I can't be bothered, I just spray it with diluted apple cider vinegar all is well again and it smells great!

All the best,

Bob F

Hope this gets posted as the site tells me the user name is already in use. Doesn't it know I am the real unclebob?

If your frame is still in good shape, is it possible you just need a new cushion?

Have you tried re-boiling it to custom fit it?
