Comparing Auto CPAPs

Post by plr66 » Tue Sep 16, 2008 6:34 pm

Can some of you knowledgable folks explain the difference between these two machines? Sorry that I may need some sleep to get it, but haven't been able to easily see it as I scan the descriptions tonight.

From cpap.com:

A-Flex: The REMstar Auto M Series with A-Flex represents an amazing new chapter in pressure therapy. Not only does it make each breath more comfortable at inhalation and exhalation, the REMstar Auto also adjusts overall therapy to accommodate the patients therapy needs due to changes in lifestyle or progression of disease state.

A-Flex is delivered by our clinically proven auto algorithm that maintains effective therapy at minimal pressures making this combination even better for patients.

A-Flex is a comfort feature built on top of the REMstar Auto algorithm. If breathing events occur, the auto algorithm raises the A-Flex pressure profile to eliminate those events, while simultaneously making sure that pressure never rises to a level thats unnecessarily or uncomfortably high.

C-Flex: Respironics has added their easy breathing C-Flex technology to the REMstar Auto M Series. Now you can have both the comfort of auto-titrating pressure with the comfort of easy exhalation, all in one CPAP.

The REMstar Auto M Series with C-Flex is is an auto-adjusting CPAP machine which is set for a range of pressures, then seeks out and delivers the lowest level of pressure needed to keep the airway open. With CFLEtechnology, not only with the pressure level vary as needed, but it will drop with each exhalation.

The auto-adjusting CPAPs were designed for patients who are unable to participate in a sleep study or whose pressure needs vary during the night according to their stage of sleep or sleep position. However, any patient will receive very comfortable therapy from this type of CPAP.

You can probabaly find the same info at cpap.com. It is worth mentioning that the A-Flex also can be set to C-Flex, or to straight CPAP.

C-Flex only works when you exhale

A-Flex can only be used in automatic mode, and works on smoothing the inhale as well.

My understanding is that the aflex machine can also be run in cflex mode.

In other words, the a flex machine has an extra mode available.

The short answer is that the A-Flex machine is newer. It can do both A-Flex and C-Flex. I don't understnad why they still have the C-Flex only machines on the market?

66.........

James Skinner is correct....an AFLEX machine is "both"....and it's the way to go.

I own both types. My personal preference is for CFLEX....I started out with it and I'm comfortable with it.

For my back-up machine, I purchased the newer AFLEX machine. I also use the AFLEX machine for travel.

When I'm on the road with the AFLEX machine, I run it in CFLEX mode....because I don't care for AFLEX.
It's not a "big deal"....CFLEX is just my personal preference.

You should purchase the AFLEX machine....because for the few extra bucks, you get more "choice"....more ways
to set the machine up so that it pleases you. All of us are different...and have different preferences.
Go for maximum choice....the difference in cost is insignificant.....especially when compared with the importance
of being successful in your therapy program.
