Hit and Miss with SmartCard Reader-HELP

Post by atruvirgo » Sun Sep 14, 2008 10:44 am

Does anyone know why it is hit and miss with my SmartCard Reader. Several times when I have gone to plug it in to get a reading on Encore it says Reader not detected. How can this be since it has been detected in the past? How can I fix this glitch? Techy folks out there please help!!

I can help if you are running Vista!

After you do the install of the card reader. Under accessories section on the computer go to "run" type in "services msc" Then find the reader and switch from manual to auto start. That fixed my card from disappearing. I haven't lost it since.

Good luck!

I've had the same thing with the two (identical) computers I have Encore loaded on. Sometimes they work consistently and sometimes they're flaky. I've had to move the plug to several different ports on one of the computers until it was consistent. On the other one, I'm still looking for the "right" USB port.
I've been able to unplug and re-insert the reader plug until it works.....usually the same port.....which makes me wonder if it's the card reader plug, itself. Make sure you are not plugging it into a USB hub and that it's a USB port that's connected to the motherboard......and that the card is inserted into the reader when it's plugged in or the computer started.

Another one of the little frustrations of life.

I found that you want to have the reader plugged into the computer and the card inserted before you start Encore.

I have 4 USB ports/hubs? on my laptop. None of them are detecting the card reader.

It won't hurt to re-install the driver by itself. The driver "Setup.exe" program is on the software CD in the "Smart Card Readers" directory. I would not plug in the reader plug until you run the setup program. Then re-boot the computer and plug it in. If it comes up with a message about not being approved for Windows (or something to that effect), click through it (accept/OK it).
And, do not plug it into a hub.

You will need to do a re-install and use the same USB everytime. Then try the fixes I was given from another board member and maybe that will be the cure. Mine did not recognize the hardware either.

Did you intend to provide a link to the fixes you mentioned? Maybe I'm just not getting it, but with your statement alone, I don't understand. Thanks!!

When troubleshooting computer or software problems it is always helpful to know whether it has worked before or is a new install which has never worked.

Also helpful to know the OS, Encore version and equipment being used.

I am using Encore PRO Version 1.8.49 I also run windows XP. I have had this installed for about 3 months. It did this once before for no reason but, I am still not sure why. I hear others have had difficulties as well. I don;t know why this is such a pain to use!

Thanks Georgio I have tried it that way also. It is a hit and miss with the card reader. No problems with Encore Pro if I could get the reader to be detected. I am so frustrated.

If you purchased the software, Respironics Customer Service at 1-800-345-6443 helped me with mine.

They told me to ignore the software sent with the reader, and got me straight.
