probably will be getting dentures. My teeth have had it. That means teeth pulled and stitches in my gums (I have gingivitis, untreated or uncleaned for the last three years). According to my gf, it takes time for the pulling teeth and stitches to heal and I might have a problem healing by using my full face mask at its high pressure of 20/11.
I also don't want to be swallowing blood while I sleep with my mask.
Anyone have any experience with having teeth pulled/getting dentures while using a machine/mask at high pressure for apnea? Is there anything to worry about?
Of course I did call my doctor and he told me to go ahead but (those of you who read my other posts know) I don't trust this doctor.
Other problems: Low testosterone, having more tests done. Lack of ability to breathe at work, no windows in this post office, filthy air, lots of big machines where I work. Used to be a heavy smoker and didn't care or notice, I chained smoked and slept in an unventilated and full of smoke room with a computer. Once I quit smoking, I became VERY aware and now should be tested for carbon monoxide poisoning...............also may have gerd and I still wake up at onset of sleep unless I use ambien.
Lots of troubles.
Getting dentures while using sleep mask
Re: Getting dentures while using sleep mask
Are you having the extractions done all at once or in stages? If it's stages you should be okay. As for having them done all at once I don't know the answer. Someone here will be able to help.
Re: Getting dentures while using sleep mask
Those I know have had the most success w/having extraction of all the back teeth and time allowed for healing (and the dentures to be made).
Then extraction of the remaining 8 front upper and lower teeth w/the dentures inserted immediately after extraction. The dentures are then removed only for cleaning and immediately reinserted durng healing. They say at first, whilst the mouth is still raw and tender from the front extractions, they can't wait to get the dentures back in as it seems to dull and negate any pain or tenderness whereas when the dentures are out for cleaning their mouth is tender and sore. They also say this method provides a better fit.
Warm salt water rinses feel good and aid in faster healing.
I would NOT recommend using CPAP while the back extractions are healing. The molar extractions are especially prone to "dry sockets" wherein the blood clot is lost and the raw "hole" is exposed to air. EXTREMELY PAINFUL! (The "cure" is to get to a dentist FAST to have the "hole" packed w/medicated "gauze").
This is an issue I would DEFINTELY discuss w/the oral surgeon!!!!

Re: Getting dentures while using sleep mask
I wouldn't use CPAP for the first few days after surgery, sleep on your side or stomach if you can, you will be drooling blood for that long anyway. You don't want the pressure of CPAP blowing bacteria into those tooth sockets and they don't sew them gums up very good if at all. Your oral surgeon should prescribe a special anti-bacterial mouthwash to use several times per day, stuff is prescription only, tastes nasty but if you use it it reduces the risk of infection.
Are you having both the upper and lowers removed? You should ask the oral surgeon about a couple implants, depending on your bone structure (lots of bone or not much bone) they may clean things up better if they know you are wanting a couple implants. When you consider implants (and you should) they sometimes grind away bone like on the mandible to make room for the implants.
The upper or maxillary denture is usually not a problem but the bottom can be when you remove the teeth as there is nothing like a hard palate to create suction to support that denture then it just flops around. If you have a couple implants placed about where your lower canines were then they are nearly like your original teeth when it comes to eating.
Periodontal disease can be very aggressive and in as little as 6 months can cause you to loose your teeth. if your dentist doesn't stay on top of it it can progress very rapidly. The bacteria found in Peridontal Disease can attach your heart valves and has even been found in the amnionic fluid of pregnant women. My daughter did her thesis on that subject. Smoking makes it much much worse and the worst thing you can do to your teeth. You can have that Perio surgery but all that does is stop the progession, once the bone is gone its pretty much gone. If your teeth are already loose surgery may not change that. But getting rid of the bleeding gums and associated pain is sometimes worth it. Ask your oral surgeon about implants to support the dentures or research implant supported dentures.
Suggest you take pictures of your current smile with natural teeth so if they make dentures they can match your natural smile and overbite. A lot of dentists will take shortcuts in making dentures, like if you have a class II overbite, they may make you a class I because it is easier, but that can totally change your smile, make you look like you are older and have sunken teeth. Highly recommend you see a Prosthdontist for the restoration. A Prosthdontist usually makes their own dentures (vs farming them out to some lab), that is because they are more picky and you will get a better more natural fitting set. That is all they do is specialize in prosthesis or replacement teeth modules. A general dentist may only do a set once a month if that often or they may not do them at all as it is time consuming. A Prosthdontist can also do implants so they are picky on how they place them because they are also doing the restoration, for example they have to place them deep enough and perfectly straight on the orignal ridge so there is enough room for the restoration to go on top. With modern implants, they are getting to the point where they drill a hole in your jaw and screw them in, bit expensive to replace them all individually but you can go with a bridge, an overdenture and get by with just a few. If you are going with immediate dentures, try and go at least 6 weeks before getting the hard reline, because your gums will be swollen and the longer you wait for that hard reline the better, swelling will be down and when the hard reline gets done they will fit better. You will probably need 1 or 2 soft relines until that happens.

Re: Getting dentures while using sleep mask
Sounds rough but I'll need the BPAP to sleep.
Getting all my teeth pulled and getting dentures put in. Can't afford implants.
BTW, my sleep is getting worse. Been on BPAP for 3 months now, was sleeping pretty well for awhile. AHI's going up each night, swallowed a lot of air as well, stomach not feeling good.

Slinky,
My dentist (oral surgeon) doesn't seem to know much if anything about apnea...............He's an old timer but I go to him because for one thing: he's honest as well as highly qualified in dentistry.

Re: Getting dentures while using sleep mask
Well, Riv, I would think that SnoreDog, thru his daughter, would be more current on this than I am. And, frankly, two bottom inplants if possible makes a LOT of sense. Most people don't have much problem w/the top denture but the bottom denture can be a real witch to keep a good fit with. And, it is true, one usually does need one or two 'soft linings" of the dentures, especially the top one, the first six months. After that one hard lining should be good for years.
Believe me, you do NOT want to encounter a dry socket if at all possible to avoid it!!!!! I rank that pain right up there w/severe burns and large kidney stone passing. EXCRUCIATING!
