CPAP & Roseaca

Post by harlleycow » Tue Sep 09, 2008 3:48 pm

I've been using my CPAP equipment since January, 2008 and I'm now experiencing a new problem. I have roseaca and it seems to be getting worse. I'm wondering if the CPAP has anything to do with it? I'm doing nothing different; i.e., no new meds, no new vitamins, no change in diet, blood pressure is fine, etc. My setting is 10 and I use the humidifier. Has anyone had a problem like this? I'm scheduled to see the sleep doc in a few weeks but thought I'd check here first since I've found so many answers to so many of my questions here. Thanks to all!

Hello HarleyCow, Welcome here
My best friend has roseacia (sp?) and cpap, Roseacia came first, cpap had nothing to do with it. Now, she just uses her med. cream on her face with the Activa mask. Gets a new cushion when needed. Has no problems so far. Dont know if this helps or not, but was a thought.

Thanks, Joyce. I guess I wasn't clear in my post. I had Roseaca before CPAP and just the last month or so I noticed it's getting worse. I do have cream, metronidazole, but can't use it at night because of the full face mask, so only use it in the a.m. Thankfully, this is not the worst thing in the world but it sure is annoying. Hopefully, the doc will have insight. Thanks for your input.

My apologies, I didnt see your join date when I posted reply , Welcome anyway, good to see you back posting
my friend says that hers is worse at times that others. She also is at a loss as to why it does this. She says she does not think that her cpap has anything to do with it. Sorry that I could not be of more help...

Thanks! If the doc thinks it has anything to do with the CPAP (although I bet he'll say it doesn't), I'll be sure to post it. Thanks again!

I have Roseaca on my chin and some on my checks. I use the Hybrid mask. After starting on cpap last year, the Roseaca got worse on my chin and where the upper straps go across my cheeks. I'm not on any medication for it, though. Just living with it. But even if I was, I couldn't use a cream at night because where it's worse is under the strap and mask. Wish I could be more help.

Get ahold of Padacheek. She made me a 'gasket' for my UMFF and the mask material no longer touches my skin or causes a problem. She'll work with you to get a good fit for your mask.

I have rosacea, and have had for a decade (I think), and I've only been on CPAP now for 6 weeks, so I don't know how it's going to affect me -- if at all. I am taking a relatively new-to-the-market drug called Oracea. It's 40 mg of the antibiotic doxycyline. 20mg is immediate release and 20mg is timed release. It has done more for my rosacea than metrogel ever did! My dermotologist says it's such a small dose that it does not function as an antibiotic but an antiflammatory. You might ask your doc about trying it....

I've had very mild rosacea for some years but had quite a flare-up when wearing my Quattro FFM. For me, the nasal pillow and nasal prong masks with Padacheek covers over the straps seem to keep it from getting out of hand.

Some people develop a sensitiivity to the metrogel. That might be a consideration. Also, has there been a change in the weather? Have you been eating spicy foods? I know that there are several factors that can cause a flare up.

Thanks everyone . I'm going to ask the doc about the new cream. Maybe that will help. I haven't had any spicy food but the weather's been humid and my mask does get very wet. Maybe that's got something to do withit.

You might consider trying baby shampoo.

I'm new to CPAP but have had rosacea for years. My rosacea is mostly on my nose and eyelids. It is affected not at all by the nasal-pillow-type full face mask I'm wearing now. Before that I tried a true full face mask, but only used it for a couple of weeks so couldn't say how it would affect rosacea, long term.

What has worked best for me is to wash my face and eyelids every day with baby shampoo. While taking a shower, I just give my face and eyelids a good, gentle going-over with the same shampoo I'm washing my hair with. This has been more effective than anything else at keeping the rosacea in check. The baby shampoo was recommended by my opthalmologist some years ago when the rosacea moved to my eyelids. I do use metrogel in the mornings when I have a flare-up, but flare-ups happen less often when I'm vigilant with the baby shampoo.

Thank you for that tip. I wonder what the reason is for the baby shampoo to work so well? My mother has rosacea, and I will definitely pass this one on to her. I keep asking the dermatologist if I show any signs, as I will have some red on my cheeks, but he keeps telling me that I am certainly not yet a rosacea patient.

That said, I cannot imagine having rosacea on the eyelids. It must be very painful at times, as well as (forgive me, no intended insult) being an odd shade for eyeshadow. (We have to view our problems with humor, IMHO, or else we should shed WAY too many tears.)

This is similar to how the milk of magnesia tip occurred, btw. (Milk of magnesia, smeared on the skin around the lips and allowed to dry, keeps tape from unduly irritating the skin. This tape is used by some to secure mouths in a closed position.) A co-worker had a case of Bell's palsy, and her eye would stay open while sleeping. She therefore wore a stick-on eye patch to bed, and this practice eventually irritated her skin. Her mother, being a former RN, had her use the milk of magnesia procedure. It worked like a charm for her, and thus it has been similarly used by quite a few of us!
