What Is an AHI?

Post by Georgio » Fri Aug 29, 2008 1:25 pm

Hello, I'm just starting reading here about all these target numbers to look for.

First, can anyone tell me how to get these numbers off my machine, and what numbers should I be looking for?

If I can determine apnea events per night, or how much air I'm leaking and such, that would be great!

I'm brand new to this & pretty tired.

Thanks

You can't. The Resmed S8 Escape is NOT fully data capable. If you have had it less than 30 days, return it and exchange it for a Resmed S8 Elite w/EPR or better yet a Resmed S8 II Elite w/EPR.

AHI = apnea/hypopnea index = the number of apneas AND hypopneas you experienced PER HOUR.

The Elite will provide the Pressure and the Leak at or below which you spent 95% of the night, your AHI, AI and HI, the number of hours used, the number of nights used (the last two also referred to as the Compliance Data).

Georgio,

I know you are tired, but you have found the right place to come for help. If you are new to CPAP than we can help you get the right machine and settings to help you after your sleep study suggests your prescribed pressure. I say suggest because many of us have had to change the original number as our bodies have not responded to the original titration. Slinky is right. You must get a machine that tells you what your pressure is and how many apneas you are having while on treatment.

Keep reading this forum and you will find that almost any question you have will be answered here. We know what you are going through. We have been there. We understand.

Don't give up.

Well, I've had it several months, and ofcourse don't know beans about equipment. It does have some sort of "data" card that came with it that can be plugged into the back module. Maybe that doesn't make any difference.

Can I get any helpfull info off of the LCD screen if not off the card? Thanks.

As far as your thread question goes, there is a blue bar above your post with a yellow lightbulb as a link to the CPAPopedia with words from the post that you can click on to get the answers.

CPAPopedia Keywords: resmed, Titration, CPAP, AHI

And, yeah.....get a data-capable machine. It'll eventually answer even more questions for you.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with your machine, but I think that yours only collects compliance data. There are machines that collect AHI data and with a card reader and the right software, you can see daily graphs of how you slept. With that information, you can tweak your pressure settings to maximize your treatment. The people here will help you with that. Finding a mask that fits and doesn't leak is the hardest part. Once you get past that you are on your way to better health.

Can someone else jump in and help him with reading his LCD?

Georgio's equipment list says:

Machine: S8 Escape CPAP Machine

Georgio asked:
"can anyone tell me how to get these numbers off my machine, and what numbers should I be looking for?"

Slinky told him right:
"You can't.

"

Georgio also asked:
"Can I get any helpfull info off of the LCD screen if not off the card?"

No, you can't. The "Escape" model records only hours of use (compliance.) Hours of use would be all that can show up anywhere.

As Slinky said, if you can get your DME (durable medical equipment provider...the home health care equipment store) to swap you an Elite for the Escape, THEN you can get useful information from the LCD window on the Elite. With a few button presses, you can see all the information Slinky mentioned right there on the Elite. No software needed at all.
