OK, the fact that you don't go into REM sleep is a problem. You have got to go get another opinion... It might not be an apnea/breathing problem at all.

GET THAT SECOND OPINION!

ANd, about the work thing - if your boss gives you static, ask him/her if he/she would rather have a bright, energetic, FUNCTIONING employee or a zombie at the controls?

Try to find a caring doctor. I had the whole sleep study thing done at Stanford and was prescribed a CPAP with pressure of 8. I coud not sleep due to insomnia and noway with a mask and breathing machine!
They switch doctors a lot and the angel doctor took interest in my well being and told me that not taking care of my OSA could cause other health issues. Tell your employer about this and even take time off without pay if you have to. In the long run, it pays tenfold.

Basically had the same thing happen - I swore to the doc that my study what NOT REPRESENTATIVE of my normal nite. He still didn't believe that I had OSA. I was being worked up for the fatal disease of pulm htn and OSA is the only reversible cause of this so I really wanted to be dx'd with it. So to make a long story short they suggested ambien to make sure that I REALLY slept. I did and I do.!!!!!!
TAKE A SLEEPING PILL FOR THE STUDY!!! Good luck.

Hey, I know exactly how you feel! I am 22 years old and showed all of the signs for sleep apnea. Well, almost. My Doc said that because I am young and not overweight that I don't have sleep apnea. The only reason he scheduled me for a sleep study is because he wanted to keep me for the next day to watch how I functioned. He KNEW that I didn't have sleep apnea and was basically scheduling the test to prove I had something else. Well, anyways, I had significant enough apnea during the night that I didn't have to stay for the next day.

BTW, if anyone knows any Dr in the Louisville, KY area, I would love to know!

I've thought about this a lot lately and just cannot come up with a way to seek treatment. I don't know how to find another doc that not only practices sleep medicine around here but is also on my network AND that would be a caring, kind doctor. I have a friend who is a GP and thought about seeing if he would just prescribe me an AUTO, but insurance wouldn't pay for it and I can't fork out that type of money. MAYBE if I could get a really cheap CPAP, but then I wouldn't know my pressure and have to go for a titration and can't afford that either. Insurance and money. Man those suck don't they? I just can't figure out an affordable way to do this. Sleep Apnea is so expensive. For right now, I'm just going to have to wait. Maybe in another couple of years, I can get it taken care of.

HisServ,
PLEASE - PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP. Somehow things will work out. Any obstacles that arise can be overcome when you believe they can. It may take time and be a pain, but what do you have but time. Time will pass you buy whether you take action or not. In todays world we have to rely on ourselves to be in charge of our health. You are so fortunate at such a young age to know what you have to deal with. Many of us oldies ( but goodies) wish we could turn back the hands of time and make different choices. I wish I would have listened to MOM and DAD. I guess they did know what they were talking about after all.

Maybe there are some local support groups that could help out. Try churches, Family Independent Agency, VFW, YMCA, Salvation Army, ect. Sometimes organizations have funds put aside to help people when they need it. Sometimes we all need a little help, it's OK.

Hang in there,
Harmony

His serv, how do you know your insurance won't pay for an APAP? Did you call and ask? Since the DME uses the same code regardless of type of machine and since the insurance's maximum allowable is the same for any machine, there is no reason to believe they will not pay for an APAP. A lot of DMEs will tell you this because they make a larger profit on the straight CPAP over the other types of machines. If your insurance balks, the doctor only has to write a prescription stating APAP and stating medical necessity.

I hear lots of people say their insurance won't pay for anything but a straight CPAP, and it is really the DME telling them that, not the insurance.

Hopefully you're still reading this message board. (You should join so people can PM you.)

If your having a problem affording a CPAP, see what state offices you have. I am a 23 yr old college student without insurance.. Yah, fun! Anyways, I went through my state office of Vocational Rehab and they paid for my whole cpap and mask.

I was also fortunate to get both of my sleep studies paid for through an office @ my hospital that helps low-income people (yah, that's me..)

Good luck and don't give up... death is def not worth it.

MY insurance won't pay either. Well sort of not pay. They have a $1,500 copay. Soooooooo, if I go to a Evil DME and get a cheapo $299 cpap for $3,000 and pay my copay I guess you could say insurance will pay for it. I'm not crazy so if its gonna cost me $1,500 I might as well get the best from cpap.com right ! And go out for a weekend with the $$$$$$$$ I saved. 2 nights hotel , nice dinner and $ to fill the tank when I get home.

Sorry, sometimes we just have to pay our own way .

Sorry your Doc is a jerk too. Fire him and interview a few others for the most important task of keeping you healthy. We need to learn that we do have a choice. If yu don't like em, fire em.
