OT - PrePaid Cell Phone Question
OT - PrePaid Cell Phone Question
I have little need for a cell phone so thought that a pre-paid would be the way to go. We are in a "dead zone" so to speak at our house. One neighbor has AllTel w/lousy reception. Another has NexTel w/lousy reception and a 3rd has Verizon w/lousy reception. We pretty much have to go 2 miles north and/or 3 miles east before getting decent reception. Which is the other reason why I opted to go w/a pre-paid cell.
However, I have to pay $10 for 83 minutes, which I almost never use. In order to roll over the unused minutes I have to add another 83 minutes every 120 days. They do send a reminder on the cell when its due for renewal.
Anyway, I had 2 hours 31 minutes on it the last time I used it. I was a day late renewing and all they were willing to give me back of that 2 hours 31 minutes was 1 hour. To say I am bent outta shape is putting it mildly!!
All I know is that the phone itself is an LG Plus Flip Top. Can I go w/a different pre-paid phone company w/this phone or if I switched would I have to buy a new phone too? Does anyone know? This was the cheapest flip top call phone the store had which is why I went w/it. I don't need or want anything more than a basic phone w/a flip top so I don't accidentally dial a number or push some wrong button when I'm not using it. I don't even know how to do more than make a call or answer a call on it and that is really all I want to know how to do.

Re: OT - PrePaid Cell Phone Question
Slinky me and the wife hardly ever use a cell phone either, we used to have nextel and we paid allot and never used it and lost so much on it that we got rid of them and we both brought a cheap Trac fone. they are cheap and easy to use, and you never have any bills, I think they are great for a person who doesn't use a phone allot. Anyway thats my 2 cents worth. Good Luck to you

Re: OT - PrePaid Cell Phone Question
Thanks, WhiteBeard. I've never heard of a Trac phone but I'll google it and see what comes up. That may well be the way for me to too then!

Re: OT - PrePaid Cell Phone Question
If you don't use very many minutes, check out T-mobile prepaid "pay as you go". You can get 1000 minutes for $100 that is good for a year (10 cents a min). Because you've spent $100 you are now a member of "Gold Rewards". At the end of the year you can buy a $10 card which only has 35 minutes but it extends all your minutes for another year. There is no minimum to spend each month or quarter and a $10 card will extend all your minutes for another year each year for as many years as the minutes last, then buy another $100 card. You do have to renew before the minutes expire just like your current plan, but it's only once a year. It's a very good plan for people that use very few minutes. I'm not affiliated with them in any way (really), just a very satisfied customer.

There are sometimes good deals for a phone on the T-Mobile web site.

Once in a while Target will have a special where if you buy the $100 card they'll give you a cheap phone & start up kit for free. Also, most phones have a lock feature that prevents inadvertent key presses from doing anything unless you press a 2 or 3 key sequence to unlock the keypad.

I don't mean to sound like a commercial, but I've been very satisfied.

Re: OT - PrePaid Cell Phone Question
If for some reason t-mobile does not have service in your area (it does not in mine ) then definately consider Trac-fone..yearly plan very much described for T-mobile and I have always had excellant service. I find that many times I was getting reception when people with traditional phones did not ! T_mobile has more minutes on their yearly plan, but I get 400 which has always lasted me a year.

Thanks, IlliniGal. I just want something simple and easy to use to make an occasional call when I'm out and about. *sigh* These two plans sound worth investigating.

Re: OT - PrePaid Cell Phone Question
Slinky - I'm not sure if this would be an option for you or not. My mom lives an hour away from me and would never get a cell phone for herself. However, I worry that if she and dad are tooling about town and needed help - they have a phone handy. I added another number on my plan and she shares my minutes. She doesn't use the cell phone very often, but I do feel better that she has it. Do you have a family member who could add you to their Cell phone family plan? I pay $10/month for my Mom (or my peace of mind!). She has called from the hospital to tell me my Dad was in the ER with his COPD. Of course, she has also called me from the department store telling me that it was senior citizen day and did I need her to pick up something using her senior discount?!
I don't think pay phones are as available as they use to be. Best of luck in your cell phone search! They do offer peace of mind.

Re: OT - PrePaid Cell Phone Question
I had a son in the military and stationed on the east coast. My youngest daughter married and moved 3 hours away. We ran up some big phone bills calling the kids. This was before there were "discount" plans on your landline. We got our cell phones for the long distance it provided without additional charge (free nights and week-ends ). After a year or so we decided to try strictly cell phones and do away with our landline. We are fortunate that we do get service where we are located. We have not had a landline for several years (at least 4 years).
