The Wall Street Journal of June 21, 2005 has an article on an outfit that does sleep studies in motels. They lease a block of rooms at motels on a monthly basis and do sleep studies just like hospital based studies.
Patients are encouraged to use the motels facilities: pool, excercise room, restraurant ect, before reporting for the study. They claim patients find it easier to get to sleep in a motel setting than a medical facility.

Great idea.
The first place I was going to go to asked if my wife wanted to come with me and could sleep in the same bed. I thought that was modern thinking.

In a hotel! To me that sounds creepy. I hate hotels, I have severe allergies and most hotels make my symptoms worse. Even the nicest hotels are kind of filthy if you start checking corners and such. So often the airconditioning system pumps out mold and that awful deodorizer they put into so many rooms, yuck. In addition, they never wash the bedspreads and rarely the blankets, if you have a strong imagination that fact can give you the willies. And I would never dream of letting my bare feet touch the carpeting. I never sleep well in a hotel room, what are they thinking?
I would run away from any sleep clinic that wanted to use a hotel room.
