Reducing rain out in the Aeiomed Headrest nasal cushions

Post by feeling_better » Thu Jul 24, 2008 1:03 pm

I like most features of the Headrest, except as it has been mentioned by many people in this forum that it has more condensation. This was the problem bothering me most.

Now I found out that at least in my case, the way the hose was positioned affects the amount of condensation significantly. Following the suggestion of my doc and some in the forum here (I have been on cpap only for 2 months), I had the hose flexibly anchored to something on the wall behind my ahead, above head level to support the hose. Some people use other things like the 'hose lift(?)' to keep the hose away. This did make turning from side to side much less disturbing (I am a side sleeper). What was happening was that the condensation from the portion of the tube above the head level was flowing into the nasal interface (even when the hose had a an insulation jacket)!

I now simply put the hose naturally go down to the ground, over my pillow, and to side of the head behind me (mine actually goes down towards the floor at the back corner of the bed, before the head board). This has eliminated the condensation almost completely -- at least in the current weather! I have even removed the hose insulation jacket to reduce its total weight, and this also makes the hose slide much easier. Turning from side to side is just as easy, the hose would be pulled in a bit, or slide back to the ground as you turn.

I have switched to this mask now from the previous Optilife.

Good for you, feeling_better. Thanks for sharing your solution to rainout. My solution is to double insulate the whole hose, all the way past where it splits in two for the pillows. I have a hole cut out for the exhaust, which I sometimes have to reposition because it gets noisy if air hits the fleece. I suspend my hose above my head so it doesn't pull. (Leaks are my biggest concern now.)

Take Care,
Cathy

tangents,

I would soon have another post about reducing leaks. I have a modification for the headgear that keeps the headgear and the nose cushions from slipping down. My pressure is low 5.5-7. At that pressure, I have seen nights with almost no leaks, especially if I can get rid of my slight mouth opening at times.
