new to cpap need advice for mask

Post by exhausted » Sat Jun 18, 2005 2:32 pm

I just got my cpap yesterday it is a Remstar plus no humidification and a comfort select nasal mask. I slept good for my first night but this morning I have a bruise on the bridge of my nose. I didn't seem to be to tight. Any suggestions about what I might be doing wrong? Also what mask is your favorite? I was told if this doesn't work I could ask for a RX for another mask from my doctor I just don't know what to ask for. I know after last night I need humidification my nose is so dry it hurts. My pressure is 11. Thanks

Many have had good results with the Resmed Activa. The Resmed Ultra mirage is also an excellent choice.

Just don't take them apart to clean them as it isn't necessary and may be a bit harder to reassemble than you realise

Cheers,

Chris

There are hundreds of masks and thousands of faces - and hopefully a match for your face

It would depend on how you sleep (positions, restlessness, etc.)

The Activaa nasal mask seems to be ther mask of choice, although I also like the F&P FlexiFit HC407 Nasal Mask because it is small, comfortable, and has few removable parts (although I have managed to remove a couple that weren't supposed to be removable!! )

Hi Exhausted,
Welcome to the forum!

The red mark on your forhead could either be from too much pressure, or a reaction to the masks material.

With any new mask, Respironics (in achat recommends soaking the mask in warm soapy water for 30-60 minutes. So start out with that.

Respironics also have animated intructions (clickon the blue words ) on the net about fitting the mask - it's worth checking. While many of the people who eventually come to this forum do so because they're not satisfied with their first mask (Frequently a "Comfort" something or other) others are - some probably that have never visited here...

That said, it is quite possible that the Comfort Select is not the mask for you. Faces and sleeping habits are very individual thing. Browse this board so you get to know the posters, look for pictures of masks on the net - our hosts here, cpap.com sell masks and have picture and video instructions for many of them.

Don't approach this with preconceptions - I started out thinking that I would never want to use a nasal pillows mask (one which connects directly to your nostrils) and yet that is the kind I'm using, very happily - the Breeze. This was after trying out 3 Comfort X (the lite, a small gel and a medium one) and a Swift.

Good luck,
Come back with any question!
O.
