Just saw a list of the best hospitals in this country! Not a one anywhere close to Texas Darn!

U.S. News and World Report listed them last year. I think they list them every year.

The National Jewish Hospital (NJC), in Denver, CO, is the number one Respiratory Hospital in the USA. For ten straight years. When I left there last summer, I told people the walls weren't made of Gold, but the people were.

I learned the major hospitals for various things are actually much cheaper
than many of our local hospitals.

The "top" hospital list means little unless you know what they are best at.

dllfo is correct. US News & World Report has evaluated and listed the top 50 teaching hospitals in the country by department for several years now. And each year they also provide information on how the evaluations and listings are determined. I just received the issue w/this year's rankings in the mail yesterday.

You can also find the listings on their website but I don't remember if the explanation of how they arrive at the evaulation results is also there.

Slinky, did you see the article about avoiding teaching hospitals in either June or July? It has to do with new students, interns being promoted to doctors. I forget the terminology used, but the point was to avoid teaching hospitals during that time frame.

I had my heart implant done at the University of Colorado Cardiology dept on a late Friday afternoon appointment. That was June 29, 2007. They did an excellent job. I guess all studies have an error rate. Thank God.

No, I hadn't read that yet. But then I usually avoid June and July anyway 'cause school is out and appointments are usually harder to get during the school vacation months. And it seems like September, October and March are the months that I end up needing Mayo! Thank God, I haven't needed them during the winter months - that drive around the Lake can be hair raising and knuckle whitening! Have had to make that trip in winter to Shriner's in Chicago for my granddaughter. HAIRY!

One Mayo trip in March was bad enough w/a flight delayed, a hairy landing at O'Hare, another hairy landing at home AND the doors frozen shut so we sat on the ground for a good lenghth of time before they could let us off the plane!!! I usually prefer the 12 hour drive but that was an emergency trip.

BTW, NJC will treat most people for free if they cannot afford it. They have a wonderful foundation there. AND free consultation once or twice a year if I remember correctly.
