Follow up...
So, when last I wrote, I had just started using a Remstar M AFlex. Initially this machine was extremely quiet, but within a month it made more noise (but tolerable). That developed into a "moan" on exhale, not too loud but still audible. 1 Year later, it developed a very loud whine/whir. I sent it in and had it "fixed" (at my expense). When I finally got it back, I was ready to have my "quiet" machine...but now, the noise is different but still there (and loud), and also, the pressure regulation seems to have problems. It tends to go to max pressure and stay there (even sometimes above the set max). Needless to say, I don't use this machine anymore. (which is a same, as I love the low profile design/package).

Meanwhile my 420G is still running, though is has developed the "whirr" noise pretty loudly now.

My main machine I've had for 2 years is the DeVilbis Intellipap. It is not super quiet, but the noise it generates is more like low level white noise (vs high pitched whines and whirring).
( I would like to reiterate, I change/and clean the filters quite often ). And this machine is getting slowly louder also.

I need another machine, but my past experience with the latest and greatest super quiet machines has left me skeptical...otherwise I would consider the Resmed S9. (I would love some feedback from someone who has used that machine for a long(er) time...vs the standard "i just bought this machine and love it" feedback).

Otherwise, it'll be another Intellipap.

I run a room A/C or fan, never worry about machine noise, I drown it out. Your Remstar, with less than two years on it was under warrenty, you shouldn't have been charged unless you did the damage to it. (Water or Running your car over it) Jim

Are you absolutely sure what you got to begin with were brand new machines and not re-conditioned ones? They routinely recycle rentals and give them out to people whose original ones break down, but shouldn't be charging you for new, of course and should be upfront about their status.

After five years, I retired my Remstar "tank" (C-flex and humidifier) with almost 15,000 totally trouble-free hours on it, and now keep it on hand as an emergency backup.

Although a "boat anchor" in weight, this trusty machine served me very well, including traveling with me all over the world during those five years.

I replaced it with an M-series, which almost immediately had problems with the humidifier. Although repaired under warranty, and working well, there were features that annoyed me.

I now use the PR1 full-time, but suspect that I'll never again see the reliability and long life of my trusty "legacy" machine.

I'm using my so called Legacy Classic Tank for over 5 years now without any problem.

I wonder how many used machines (not even reconditioned) are being hacked back to zero and sold as 'new'.

I have had a REM star tank for 14 years, and it just started "whirring" last night. Guess it's time to review my options
Thanks

Remstar Pro here.
After 9 months, 2 times falling from 1m to the floor, it is now much more noisy.

On 1/25/2007 I started using my first cpap a Remstar M seriese. After 20,658 hrs
the darn on off switch started sticking so I retired it. I then started using the older
tank style Remstar auto and it's still going strong at 12,845 hrs .

If it really was a brand new machine I will ask this.

1) What surface to you keep it on? Especially, is it level?
2) What kind of floor is in the room? Is it a very hard surface such as marble?

I have a Sunrise Horizon LT that I picked up long ago
as a backup. I never used it and only today turned it
over to read the total hours. Heck it's hardly broken
in it only has 39,910 hrs on it. They don't make them
like this anymore all you need to set the pressure is a
small screwdriver and a manometer ? Oh if someone
needs a gently used cpap this one is for sale . $99.95
but I might take less ......
