extra warrenty worth it?

Post by alinto » Fri Jul 11, 2008 8:57 pm

I am a new cpap user and am about to purchase my 1st machine. I was loaned a resmed elite 2 and find it ok. The lab told me that it has a 3 yr warrenty and for another $250 I can add another 2 years. How reliable are the machines? Is this worth it? I run it at a high value - 17. Would this affected the durability of the machine? Another side question. I am still feeling claustraphobic with a full face mask - I am a mouth breather. With my high pressure number, would I be able to use a hybrid? Any help would be appreciated.

I assume you are talking about the ResMed S8 Elite II machine. You may want to consider the S8 Autoset II with humidifier and is will do everything the other one will do and also has auto mode and easy breath mode in auto. I personally would not waste any money on an extended warranty. The equipment is quite reliable and all they do is exchange your unit for another used unit. Bad Deal, might as well just buy a used unit as a backup instead.

Yeah, this extended warranty business is a new one on me!! I wonder if some innovative US local DME supplier has come up w/yet a new gimmick to leech some money out of us?

I suspect it is a Canadian vendor (3 year warranty not the US 2 year) hence I asked. If it Canadian situation then their provincial insurance dictates so much if they choose to use it.

I need more information.

You are correct . I live in Toronto, Canada. Because of the severity of my sleep apnea, the government pays $780 towards the unit and will do this every 5 years. Hence the 2 years warrenty extension. I am testing the s8 elite 2. How does the s8 autoset II differ? I thought that the s8 elite II also has the easy breath feature? Thanks for all your replies. I am leaning on not buying the extended warranty.

The only truely significant difference between the S8 II Elite and the S8 II AutoSet Vantage is that the S8 II AutoSet IS an autoPAP. If it is an S8 II the device does have the EasyBreathe technology.

Normally I wouldn't consider the extended warranty for a Resmed device, especially at the price quoted for it, but there is always that "new" that gives one pause. Look at the Respironics M Series integrated humidifier fiasco.
