Terminology for medical ID bracelet?

Post by pjwalman » Mon Jul 07, 2008 6:31 pm

I am trying to figure out what to put on a medical ID bracelet, and the spaces allowed are pretty short. Okay, admittedly maybe it is stupid to be spending so much time considering what will be most effective here, but if I'm going to get the bracelet, I figure I might as well do it right.

If I put "severe O.S.A." on one line, is the O.S.A. common enough for any medical professional, paramedic, whatever, to recognize? Or should I just put "sleep apnea" on one line and not worry about putting the severity (my thinking that the "severe" part will make them pay more attention, but that could be just a delusion of mine). I don't suppose hypertension is enough of a condition to worry about listing 'cause they're always going to check your blood pressure, but I suppose I ought to make room for hypoglycemia, and I'm definitely leaning towards the O.S.A. as the first thing to write down.

Your input is appreciated! And I apologize if I'm worrying about what some would call minutiae, but that's the kind of brain I have.

Peggy

Medic alert bracelet

Mine says "SLEEP APNEA:CPAP". The bracelet says lots of other thing too but not about sleep apnea. Hope this helps.

My Medic Alert tag says "Sleep apnea, uses CPAP"

A medical provider can get my prescribed pressure if they call the Medic Alert phone number.

How 'bout this on it (big smile)?

Here lies sweet Peggy Walman
Who had Obstructive Sleep Apnian,
She called out for help with a start
but alas, died with a great big fart,
and the world will never be the same, man.

I can just hear George Carlan saying something like that,
so take it with the humor intended,
I really don't mean any harm, so PLEASE don't be offended!

Your friend,

It's going to be okay in the end; if it's not okay, it's not the end.

Also, the Sleep Apnea Association will send you a medical bracelet with a minimum donation of $25.

I really like mine. Relieved to have it on me!!

SuperGeeky, what does the medi-bracelet from Sleep Apnea Org. say? That's where I started, but I couldn't see anything on the bracelet from their picture and wondered if it just had the medical symbol, period. Does it say your name and that you have sleep apnea?

Thanks!

Peggy

Wait a second while I take it off It says "I have Sleep Apnea" See card in wallet.

So, since I'm in D.C., I went down to K Street and got it in person. Very impressed with the Director of the SA Association!

He handed me a card and an extra one for my wallet. On it, you can put a lot of info. Doctors, conditions, emergency contact stuff.

After I fill mine out, I'm going to laminate it so it doesn't wear out

This is just an absolute must, for everyone with SA! And, the donation goes to a great cause!

P.S. has the standard medical symbol on the other side...

MedicAlert wrote:MedicAlert® is a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1956 with a mission to protect and save lives, is headquartered in the United States and has international affiliates in nine countries.
I have had my MedicAlert necklace and bracelet tags since BEFORE I had cpap--although, I may have had undiagnosed apnea. Thus, my MedicAlert tags do not mention apnea or CPAP.

Please note that I wore a tag provided by a foundation for several years. It covered only ONE condition and had my name impressed on it; however, it did note that one serious condition and my specialist's contact telephone. However, there is more than just one condition that a medical tag should highlight (for me, at least).

Changes in Information:
However, my tag says, among other things, "CALL IMMEDIATELY." I added "sleep apnea" to my online list of conditions, just as I am able to modify the prescriptions and their dosages as they change. Any changes are also able to be printed as a foldable wallet card to be carried with me right away.

THIS is why I personally cannot find a better service than that of MedicAlert. They never will remove my record, even if I do not pay the membership fee. The membership fee must be paid, though, in order to update the information they have on record.

Tags:
Should anyone think that the tags are ugly or cumbersome, let me say that there are MANY styles available now. I have been complimented over and over on my lovely pendant or bracelet. I take this as a chance to educate others, who may need to know in case of an emergency. They may also not realize that they should have a tag themselves, or that someone they know should have a tag.

A Choice for Self-Care:
You may wish to purchase a generic tag. Please note, though, that they lack the adaptability and increased information available through the MedicAlert Foundation offerings. But, the generic tags DO have value--emergency personnel have been trained to look for tags of all kinds.

It is all your decision. It is your health, and your choice of how to manage your health. This is just as it is for treating oneself with CPAP: anyone caring enough to read this forum is probably the same type to wear a medical tag...are you not?

And, now you have my Image worth on medical tags!

Karen,
Who feels safe enough to return to pla..err, work

On this webpage:

http://www.medids.com/free-id.php

you can set up and print a medical ID wallet card with all your information. It's free, and free to update it any time there's a change.

The site also sells various medical id ID bracelets, pendants, etc.
