Another newbie!!

Post by so tired » Sun Jun 12, 2005 3:17 pm

Hi everyone! I found this board about 2 weeks ago and have been lurking. You all seem to be a great group of helpful people and so funny too!

I have mild OSA and have slept with the cpap 3 nights now. I slept about the same amount of time as I did before. I am using the Breeze nasal pillows at 5 cm. with a heated humidifier. At first my mouth was dry when I woke up so I increased the humidity. I have the medium pillows as all the dme had was medium and large. I did read somewhere that most women need to use the small size. How do I know which size? My nose is a little sore but I bought the Ayr gel and tried that the past 2 nights. Also, I have a silly question! If I continue with the pillows, will my nostrils get bigger?? My nose is already big enough, thank you! I know, I know, I'm vain, but....

I really have not felt more rested with the cpap. Is it too soon to tell if it will work? I am still waking up a lot during the night. I am determined to make it work and try to have a good attitude!

Lastly, I have RLS also and was told to never take Ambien again, but I have seen where some of you do. I have a script for Clonazepam but try to take it only once a week or so to avoid addiction. What about Mirapex or Requip? I checked their websites and it seems that one can fall asleep wihtout any warning while taking either of those drugs. What other options do I have?? I usually only get the RLS while I am trying to go to sleep, but occasionally get it in the middle of the night when I wake up. I will be seeing the pulmonologist this week and want to know what to ask him. Sorry this is so long! And thanks in advance!

I can't help you with the RLS, for I don't have that.

Kinda wish I did, my legs sure could use the exercise!

Try and be aware of how you are different as you go along. Maybe you'll feel a little more rested in the daytime, don't know. I did, but still struggled at nite. It could take time for you to adjust. It's only my opinion, but I would wait awhile before using drugs for things. I would worry it would mask or hide how you are doing. I prefer to isolate treatments to see how they do over time. You might want to see if you improve with your cpap first, to see if the mask is working for you, or the pressures, etc. Only a thought. I'm sure there are plenty of people here who could help with questions about RLS.

Keep us posted on how you are doing. It helps us as well, to know. We learn from each other. I started my treatment in November. I feel so much better in the daytime, but still struggle some at nite. But everyone seems to be different. The important thing is to keep at it, and not give up. Even if you skip a nite or so, keep going back to it. It can really help.

Welcome, by the way!

Welcome aboard !

You say you are at 5. That is very low. You also didn't mention if you had an Auto unit. If you have an autoyou may try setting the range at 5-10. If no auto then increase it to 6 for a few nights.

Dry mouth is often caused by mouth leaks or mouth breathing. Mouthbreatheing is also caused by low humidity. Increasing the setting on the humidifier may help.

Can't help with the RLS. I do believe in avoiding drugs if possible.

Proper diet, exercise and sleep hygine will help for sure. Of course , avoid caffeine.

Good Luck,

Cheers,

Chris

Ambien

I have tried to adjust but am having better luck with the Ambien. 10mg.

My APAP is comfortable now, but only gives me 2-5 hours sleep, so I tried Ambien and get eight hours of good sleep and feel better the next day. I am afraid that the pill will replace the machine, but whatever works is where I am at.

Hi and welcome!

I can't help either with the RLS, sorry.

I have been on my CPAP now for 3 nights. I am also only on 5cm and I also have the heated humidity. I can't tell much of a difference yet either, but I've heard it can take several weeks or so. I am sleeping ok at night, but I'm still getting tired and sleepy during the day. I had to nap twice today. Anyway, I'm faithfully using my CPAP at all times when I sleep. I wake a LOT during the night to use the restroom. I've ALWAYS been that way but it really gets to me. I have a small bladder. I feel lucky because the first mask I was set up with, a gel mask, seems to be working well for me. From what I understand, luck with the first mask is rare. I am gonna try to get another mask when I can though because the good folks on here have said that it is good to change every other night or so. That way you are not always putting pressure on the exact same areas.

I'm glad you are posting, keep us all updated, the info is a big help here. I have learned a LOT by reading what others experiences are like. Good luck to you. Keep at it and try not to get discouraged!
