ResMed Activa Mask Size

Post by khvn » Wed Jun 11, 2008 5:40 pm

ResMed Active mask has 3 size large, standard and shallow.

The term "shallow" confuses me. I can guess that "shallow" means the mask is most like like not as "high" or "prominent" than other sizes.

I'd like to avoid the bulk. Could someone confirm that "shallow" is the smallest of the 3 masks? Thanks!

The Standard and Shallow are the same in length, the difference is the cut out, the Standard is for a more "pointed nose bridge, whereas the Shallow is for a more "square or broad nose bridge.". Most wear the Shallow I think. I do. The Standard leaked terribly. I would try this one first.

I just bought a shallow activa mask off of cpap auction. I was unsure of the size also. I am female and use a petite size in most of the masks I have tried.

The Activa just doesn't fit very well. I love the feel of this mask and the way it is supposed to inflate to hold a seal. For me, it hangs down to the bottom of my top lip and the top is right above my nose. I can get it to seal sitting up and laying down, but only briefly before it becomes dislodged.

If it came in a smaller size, I think all would be well. I would see if I could borrow one and try it out before making a purchase outright. Also, it could be I need a standard size, but am afraid to spend money on a standard since I am not convinced that it would work any better.

Let me know how it goes, if you do try one.

My guess is that "shallow" is the smallest size among the 3 sizes (large, standard, shallow) of the activa mask. If you have sealing problem with "shallow", then "standard" can only bring more bad news.

From my encounter with my shallow for the first time last night, it appears that you wouldn't get a good seal if the mask is on either too tight or too light. The 2 "cheek" velcros need to be fastened just right to let the mask perform the way it's supposed to.

Try this:

(1) Lay on your back with the mask on and the machine blowing,

(2) Un-fasten the 2 "cheek" velcros and let the mask rise to its highest position. Play with the velcros to get a feel for how far the mask can rise and fall without leaking,

(3) Now pull on the velcros to bring the the mask down to about half way between its lowest and highest positions. Fasten down the velcros at this midway position and you're ready for a, dare I say it, "leakless" night.

khvn, you can go to ResMed's website and download their Mirage Activa template, print it out, and follow the directions for cutting and fitting. If you don't have a printer at home, call ResMed (toll-free # @ website) and they will send you a free template (at least their CPAP Patient Advocate - think that was her title) sent me one some while back when I'd called with questions in general including fitting.

Like all here to offer help 'bout this mask's adjustments - try all the combinations. And when they say "loose" it is probably looser than you think at first. Don't overlook trying out each of the forehead choices & combos both on the mask & headgear for the upper lip problem especially, as these will affect where the mask rests at it's lowest point on your face.

AND, one additional consideration for you where the mask touches your top lip in a bothersome manner....

After getting all your gear on and "It's A Go!"reach back behind your head with both hands, get ahold of the bottom-most portion of the headgear strap and flip it up once (roll it up onto itself). The twisted strap doesn't bother me, hope it wouldn't bother you. This has helped me tremendously in adding to the mask's staying power in side-to-side changes and remaining a little higher above the mouth.

Firstly, you've got to verify correct cushion size - the template isn't perfect, but it is a better than a guess or nothing.

I am a woman with an average (if there really is such a thing?) size head and facial features, and I use the shallow.

In my estimation, this mask is worth the ole college try! Hang in there - you'll find what is right for you.

Hi Brooke--

I have an extra standard activa mask I am willing to let you borrow to try if you promise to send it back to me. I love the activa--it has a great seal when it fits right. PM me and let me know. Actually, if you have the shallow mask, is all you would need is a standard cushion, they are interchangeable on the mask interface. Let me know, and I can send you the cushion to try if you would like!!

Whoa! My guess was completely wrong - "shallow" is not necessarily the smallest size of the three fittings large, standard and shallow!

Thanks to Patzee who pointed out the ResMed fitting template, it appears that ResMed has added yet another dimension to mask fitting. To wit, we now no longer simply talking size (small, medium, large), ResMed has thrown shapes into the mix as well.

It makes sense. Size alone no longer cuts it. Never did if you think about it. Size plus shape really add up to better sealing. Kudos to ResMed for taking mask fitting up one notch.

Now only if ResMed can half the weight of the Activa, I swear I wouldn't lay my eyes on another mask for the rest of me life.
