Got a question on increasing ap's?

Post by gailzee » Thu Jun 09, 2005 6:45 pm

Ok, so I have a question or two. Been on my apap for 4+ mos. now. Have tweaked my pressure up to 6.5-14. I am noticing for last few wks off/on, that my ap episodes have increased... Any ideas? I have raised my pressure to starting out from the 4.0-5.0, to 5.0, to 6.0, now the 6.5....
Max pressure is around 11 sporadically............................
Any ideas?
Could allergies be a problem? Incrreasing pollen/mold in our region isn't helping.....I do wake up stuffed up...
Have even tweaked the humidifier as well...

Just wondering?
Thanks..........

Gailzee,

When I first started using my APAP I ran the min/max pressure for a couple weeks from 4 to 20. Then, using encore pro, and my encore, I was able to anlayze my AHI vs. pressure (along with snore index etc.). I found that my AHI hit a minimum around 9cm. When my machine ran up to higher pressures than this, my AHI actually went up. I also would get non responsives above 10cm while below 10 I do not get any. My snore index went to 0 at about 10cm. I think, for me, there must be some secondary affect happening where my body began to give the opposite reaction than is logically expected to higher pressures. I noticed my machine, in an attempt to lower my AHI began running up to higher and higher pressures, but the higher it went the worse my AHI would get. The logic in the machine I am sure is telling it to increase the pressure to reduce the AHI and so it goes until it hits the upper limit. It's possible others are reacting to the higher pressures in the same way I am. This would also explain why some are seeing what they are calling run away pressures on their autos.

So I've actually determined that my optimum pressure is between 8.5 and 9 cm, and anything higher or lower I get worse results. So now after fiddling with settings and adjustments for the past few weeks, not to mention adjusting to xpap and the mask, last night I was able to hit my lowest AHI and it was under 5!! I hit 5 one other time, but this was my first night under!! I'm also sleeping on average 7 hours a night straight through with my machine on. I still do not feel clear and rested, but I'm hoping this will come with time.

Anyway maybe this is something for you to think about. Going to higher pressures may be giving you the opposite affect than you expect.

Also, I wake up clear, but I need the humidifier and lots of decongestant around the clock to do that. I'm also using a steroid nasal spray. If you are not using any meds to keep your sinuses clear, you might want to consider adding some.
